Mary's Place Christmas Bags
For as long as anyone here can remember, the Advent season has been an opportunity for our students to reach out to our wider community. This year's we've taken the opportunity to reach out and work with the Catholic women's ministry on the downtown eastside called Mary's Place.
At the heart of our Christmas initiative is keeping focus on our core value of “making our community and our world a more just and caring place”. The LFA Youth in Action Team coordinated a school-wide drive to collect toiletries and small gift items for Christmas presents to be handed out at Mary’s Place annual Christmas party for women of the Downtown Eastside.
The lovely, spirit-filled women who gather weekly at “Mary’s Place” for coffee, food, and friendship will be blessed by our LFA community. We were challenged by Sister Marian to collect enough items to make 100 Christmas presents. Anyone who knows our community well won't be surprised that our community of students, staff, and alumnae crashed through our goal: generously giving enough to double the goal. The abundance of items collected will be used throughout the year at Mary’s Place and be shared with other residence of the DTES at our Youth in Action monthly outreach trips to Oppenheimer Park.
Thank you to everyone who made contributions and know that every item donated will be much appreciated. In the words of Sister Marianne: “Thank you to all the good people of Little Flower Academy for your generosity. Your support, presence, and love mean so much to our women.”
