LFA Junior Basketball Team won their first playoff game 48-43 vs St.Pat's

Coach Allan
The Junior team is heading to STMC in Burnaby tomorrow, February 6th, for their second playoff game. The game is at 4:00pm.
This game was originally scheduled for 4 pm and the change in start time to 5:30 pm meant that two team members might have to miss the game. After learning of the importance of the game we had our full roster, other than our one injured player. During league play, the Angels beat St. Pat's by a significant margin, but it was the best shooting night all season for the Angels and we knew it would be a much tougher game this time. Additionally St. Pat's was putting in extra practice time and felt confident they could win this re-match.

Once again the Angels started slowly and allowed their opponent to take a 4-0 lead before getting on the board. The Angels started to make some baskets which allowed them to put their zone press into action and cause three turnovers and end the first quarter with an 11-8 lead. The second quarter saw St. Pat's make adjustments for the zone press and they cut down on the turnovers and the second quarter saw them hit three 3 pointers and several outside shots to take a 28-21 lead late in the second quarter.

The Angels used a timeout to regroup and while Bo Jackson knows several sports, Kim(bo) Kavlekar '21 knows defence. Rochelle from St. Pat's was red hot in the 2nd quarter hitting three outside field goals and two 3 pointers. Kimbo showed Gary Payton that she knew glove like defence and held Rochelle off the scoresheet the rest of the way. Other than one breakway in transition, Kim(bo) locked down Rochelle who was scoring and creating offence for St. Pat's. The Angels closed the half with 2 field goals to cut the deficit to 28-25 at the half.

After the timeout the Angels were able to go on a 12-0 run as St. Pat's couldn't score with Rochelle getting locked down. During a critical 3rd quarter the Angels outscored St. Pat's 13-4. The Duke Blue Devils had Trajan Langdon the Alaskan Assassin, but the Angels have Hanna Garcia '21 the Latin Assassin as she hit 3 field goals. The game was won during this critical 3rd quarter as the Angels outscored St. Pat's 13-4 getting 5 points from Alexis Mezzaroba '21 and a field goal from Brooke Hamilton Wong '21.

The Angels were up 38-32 after 3 quarters and the game had already had 4 lead changes so it was still anyone's game. To this point the game also resembled a bit of a chess match between the coaches and they reacted to our zone press and we adjusted to shut down their scorers.

Early in the fourth quarter the Angels extended the lead to 43-33 and it was starting to look like they were going to be able to control the game. But the Angels aggressive defence ended up putting St. Pat's into the bonus early in the fourth quarter and put the outcome of the game back into doubt. Once again the Angels achilles heel of not moving their feet and getting reach fouls was coming back to bite them. St. Pat's hit a number of free throws while in the bonus to get the score to 46-41. The bonus free throws also caused Emily Silva Pinto '21 to foul out of the game. But here is where the Angels depth showed and Natalie "the Jet" Hui '21 came off the bench and played great defence and secured key rebounds to ensure St. Pat's didn't get any second chances.

St. Pat's had momentum and St. Pat's was defending Hanna very tightly, but this is when Brooke Hamilton Wong '21 became Big Time Baller Brooke as she hit the two biggest field goals of her basketball career in the final minute of the game to give the Angels a 7 point lead and effectively ending any chance St. Pat's had of making a comeback.

Earlier in the season the Angels overrelied on Hanna and Alexis to win games, but this victory had key contributions from everyone. Kim with 7 points and her glove like defence on Rochelle was simply amazing and turned the momentum of the game in our favour. Hanna had her customary game leading the team with 14 points, Mikyala Stelling '21 provided her customary great defence. Big Time Baller Brooke had her highest scoring game of the season when the team needed it most and scored 4 field goals. Both Lauren and Carmen Accili '21 were outside threats to St. Pat's 2-3 zone and played well. Alexis once again was fantastic in transition and played great defence. Kate-Lynn Hanna '22 provided great defence and rebounding. Natalie scored a key basket and was active on defence and the glass. Emily contributed two key baskets from the elbow to thrwart the St. Pat's zone and provided her usual good defence.

Congratulations to the 18/19 Angels junior team on a fine playoff win.
