Angels Win League Semi Final

The Angels typical strong defence and reliable scoring waned during a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 26th Street Tournament. There were some accolades for the individual efforts of Ceili Mc Cabe ’19 amd Maya Landero Van ’20, who were selected as all stars; and for Allison Kuzyk ’20, who was chosen as Angel of the Tournament, but the team was looking to rebound, seeking a critical win the league semi -final game. The winner would earn their chance to play in Provincial qualifying tournament next week. Their opponent tonight was an evenly matched, equally hungry Notre Dame Jugglers.
The Angels were playing with a limited bench as injuries continue to plague the team. The game started off slow and the Jugglers took their opportunities to lead 36-35 at half time.

Ceili showed why she is the heart and soul of this team as she her never slowed down or quite, despite sustaining a painful injury during the game. The back and forth changed in the second half when Alexis Fong ’19, who was not scheduled to play due to injury, hit a timely three. Her steady defensive influence also buoyed a tired Angel team. Likewise, Kayla Canama ’19 continued to work her way back into basketball game-shape, and played with conviction to factor in the game’s outcome. She, too, had to fight off a painful blow when she was accidently hit driving to the basket.

The game was decided in the last two and a half minutes. With the Angels up 61-60, Alexis played like a libero in volleyball positional play intercepting passes, getting rebounds to start the Angels transition. Ashley Velasco ’19, who never takes a shift off, hit a critical 20 footer. Kayla, Maya and Ceili all hit low post or foul shots to pull ahead in the final moments to secure the 73-65 win.

LFA could have used so many excuses to not deliver in this critical game. It is a testament to team’s resiliency and their “never give up” modus operandi that they pulled off this win. Notre Dame played hard and should be commended for their excellent play. For the 2019 grads, this would be their fifth time playing in the league final championship winning three so far. Winning the league championship Thursday would be nice, but tonight it was mission accomplished by securing their spot in the provincial qualifying tournament. Go Angels!
