Junior Physics Olympics Announcement

We are really excited to announce STEAM Club is piloting a new Junior Physics Olympics sub-club, which will be available for students in Grades 8 through 11.The wider STEAM Club is a lunch-time and after school club that ensures that every student is able to access the new STEAM program, even if they are not able to take the course. Offering the specialized Physics Olympics for our non-Grade 12 students will be a whole new way for students to get involved.
The Jr. Physics Olympics / STEAM activity is an opportunity for students who are interested in science, applied science, or engineering. Students will apply science concepts to solve problems.

They will learn to safely use an array of hand tools, measuring tools (ruler, tape measure, micrometer, vernier calipers, dial indicators), fasteners, adhesives, power drivers/drills. They will use other tools such as Computer Aided Design, 3D printer, CNC machines.

They will learn to apply the engineering design process of understanding the problem > ideation / research > rapid prototyping > final build. They will learn how to leverage failure into success.

This year, we are building a Rube Goldberg machine. We hope to form two groups of Jr. Physics Olympians: one group of Grade 8 and 9's and a second group of Grade 10 and 11's.

The STEAM club meets Monday and Wednesdays after school. The Jr. Physics Olympics at LFA is non-competitive. It is designed to be a fun experience and an opportunity for your daughter to try something new. Grade 12's are not excluded. At the beginning of each school year, a team of Grade 12's will be selected to compete at UBC's Physics Olympics, which is an external event that takes place every year, in March.

The club sponsor teacher is Mr. Chow. We are also very fortunate to have two higly engaged LFA parents: Mr. Brown and Mr. Johnston are professional engineers and STEAM program mentors for the students.

Please email (chowd@lfabc.org) Mr. Chow if you have any questions about Jr. Physics Olympics / STEAM at LFA.
