Book Drive: Multilingual “Mother Tongue” Collection for the Library

In response to a student-inspired initiative, we are excited to launch an LFA book drive. This, however, is no ordinary book drive. We are excited to create a small multilingual collection for the Little Flower Academy Library. We seek books that are ‘like new’ and relevant for high school students. We want to represent the various languages spoken by our students or their parents and grandparents. Can you help?
We want to represent the various languages spoken by our students or their parents and grandparents. Classics and books suitable for young people are particularly needed. We are also interested in current magazines that would be appropriate for young people such as news magazines or general interested magazines. We would be happy to receive subscription-style publications on a regular basis.

The initiative has been conceived and spear-headed by Anna Mazurenko '19, a grade twelve student who has been a Kids Literature Challenge member since grade eight and book club leader since grade 9. As well as a book club participant throughout, she came to the library earlier in the school year with a proposal to develop a small multilingual collection that would be reflective of the “incredible variety of cultures and languages practiced by her school population.”

Anna's proposal was well thought through. She explains that, “as a child of immigrants, I grew up understanding the cultural significance of language. Language opened up the doors to the world for me. I feel like the world would be a more accepting and connected place if everyone invested the time to explore other cultures and the incredible languages they offer. By helping others connect with culture, I sincerely hope to play a role in helping students see how languages and the human experience are intertwined. Knowing more languages isn’t just knowing more words; it’s learning about culture, history and humanity. Books have also always played an important role in my life and linguistic endeavors. I believe that with greater access to a variety of literature from all corners of the world, more students may be able to nurture their own interest in reading and languages. We, as a school, have a unique opportunity to provide this environment for so many young minds.”

Anna started this initiative by donating several books of her own as well as those collected from family and friends in various languages such as Russian, German, and Ukrainian. We did some anecdotal research and discovered that languages spoken at home by LFA students included Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, Tamil, French and Spanish... to name just a few. In addition, the family of Ao Mei Geng '19 has given a generous financial donation, which will help grow this collection. We now have a ‘seed’ collection and would like to further grow our multilingual section with your help.
