Great Wins at PRIMUN, Tokyo...

... And, an amazing opportunity to meet Malala. Read on to see our student impressions of the whole trip experience...
Twenty Eight Model UN Club members had great success and many adventures in Japan during and after the Model UN conference in Tokyo. All delegates enjoyed the magestic conference venue, meeting many very interesting students from various parts of Asia and debating world issues and winning awards. Five LFA students won 6 awards overall and they are as follows:

Haley Wieczorek '20 and Deborah Wong '20 won Outstanding Delegate Awards on the UNHRC (Human Rights Committee) and Anjali Siega '20 won 2 awards -the Best Position Paper Award and Honorable Mention on the same committee.

Lucy Borowski '21
and Ellie Hwang '21 won Outstanding Delegate Awards on WHO (World Health Organization)

Congratulations!

The World Health Organization at this conference had 91 delegates! So these awards were truly amazing feats! These winning delegates demonstrated many of the important skills needed for parliamentary style debate such as speaking with confidence and clarity, being involved continuously in the debate and liaising with others well to create viable resolution papers.
Again, well done MUN Angels!

Here are some tudent reflections on the conference and the tour after...

Since I was a  participant in the International Harvard Model Congress Conference which was very well run, I was nervous that  PRIMUN would not live up to my international conference expectations. Fortunately, I was extremely wrong in my predictions. Without a doubt, the highlight of my conference was the chairs. They were extremely skilled and showed a genuine interest in the development of our public speaking skills. They were not solely teaching us how to succeed in MUN, but how to succeed in life because public speaking is a fundamental life skill as it can enhance your reputation, build self-confidence, and open up countless work opportunities. Furthermore, MUN is truly FUN and allows you to meet new people. Our world is vast and it is truly astounding the numerous cultures which exist today. Having meaningful conversations with people on the opposite side of the globe easily enables you to gain a greater understanding of their culture and beliefs. Each cultural group has different perspectives that we can learn from and use to enrich our life. These conversations also create relationships that can last forever. Relationships like these were formed at PRIMUN. This resulted in a delegate from Japan coming to the airport to say goodbye and to wish us a safe flight.  Clearly, I have thoroughly enjoyed PRIMUN due to the friends created, the intermediate level of debate which challenged my critical thinking skills, and the dedication given by our chairs to improve our MUN skills.

In the beginning, I didn't even realize that she was there.  It was only when some people started saying that Malala was there did I realize.  Honestly, it was so refreshing to see that although she is a well known celebrity, she is able to keep a low profile.  Nowadays, so many celebs like to flaunt their status, but she seemed completely comfortable going among us unnoticed, like she had no need for public attention. It really inspired me to not focus so much on gaining attention and validation from others, but rather to be comfortable with myself, and validating myself, like Malala.  It was very cool to see the woman who stood up to the Taliban to fight for girls' right to education, especially in a country where females are seen as lesser.  This was a day that I'll never forget!

My experience at PRIMUN definitely shaped the way I now perceive Model UN. With well-versed chairs from UC Berkeley and UC San Diego and sharp delegates hailing from Japan, Korea and China, this was sure to be an unforgettable conference that would challenge me in all of the quintessential aspects of MUN. Debate, collaboration, and diplomacy were all values strongly held at the core of this conference and necessary to hone in order to resolve the pressing matter at hand. In the UNHCR, we were presented with the multifaceted and universal issue of refugee settlement, in addition to the unexpected earthquake crisis that united all three committees to give a prompt and comprehensive response. Aside from the intense debate that ensued during committee sessions, the UNHCR also fostered a warm and welcoming environment for beginner delegates. Thanks to our chairs, Michelle and Brock, these delegates were able to immerse themselves in the discussions without feeling intimidated.

Although the conference lasted two short days, the lessons and memories that I have learned and made could not have been gained in any other lifetime.  I am so incredibly grateful for the time and dedication Mrs. Mills and Mr. Coady (and of course, Akiko, our gracious tour guide) put into planning this trip; planning international MUN trips every year is no easy feat! Having had the opportunity to make friends who live halfway across the globe, engage in riveting debate about prevalent issues, and explore beautiful Japanese cities, I can confidently say that this MUN trip was not one to forget!

Outstanding Delegate

I have participated in six Model UN conferences in the last two years, and PRI MUN 2019 has without a doubt been my favorite! My committee, the UNHCR, was run by two outstanding chairs who created a comfortable environment for each delegate to improve and grow. Michelle and Broc did a wonderful job of answering any questions that we had and never used their authority as chairs over us. At the start of the conference, I doubted my public speaking abilities, and my indecision began to cost me as I realized that my participation was lacking. As a result of the chairs friendly demeanor, I felt comfortable enough to ask for their help to ameliorate my skills for the next day. The biggest lesson that I have learned from this conference is that the key to improvement is letting go of your fears, and I am happy to say that I was able to do that. In addition, I was truly inspired by my fellow delegates who spoke with such eloquence despite having English as their second language. Thank you PRI MUN, for giving me the opportunity to learn more about myself and others!

Best Position Paper Award and Honorable Mention,

This trip marked the first time I've even set foot in Asia and was a truly incredible experience overall. The conference itself gave me a great opportunity to learn more about culture, public speaking, and improvisation in situations where I may have shied away in past conferences. Going into it, I honestly wasn’t sure if I had prepared enough. I had done my research but didn’t pre-write any speeches as I’ve done in the past. This conference taught me that research is, of course, valuable to have, but won’t define one as a delegate on its own. In the end, it was up to me to get my points across, participate, and take control of the committee. The debate among other things such as getting to know new people and witnessing the dynamic of a totally different culture made it really enjoyable. The venue was also incredible and very modern. I thought it came off as a museum almost with the many statues. Thank you for making our trip one to remember!

Some thoughts on the tour after the conference!

Japan 2019 was an incredible and unforgettable experience. I am truly blessed to have been given the opportunity to immerse myself in a completely different culture and lifestyle. Our trip began with a ten-hour flight directly from Vancouver to Tokyo. Despite a technical error in the “in-flight entertainment system” which resulted in some of us not having access to the TV’s, we safely landed in Tokyo. As soon as we got out of customs, we were greeted with a warm smile by our superb tour guide, Akiko. Our first night consisted of a trip to the famous Harajuku Shopping district where we were welcomed with bright neon signs, exciting skin care products, and Green Tea galore. After walking along the strip, we went to dinner which was quite an experience. Each table had a stove top in its center, and we were responsible for cooking our own meal. This was a great bonding opportunity for everyone and created a very enjoyable atmosphere which would continue for the rest of the trip. The next two days were spent at Senzoku Gakuen School, an all-girls school, which is where the MUN conference was held. After many hours of gripping debate, we finished strong, and not only won several awards, but also fostered meaningful relationships with fellow delegates. We commenced our week of sightseeing with a trip to the largest Starbucks in the world! This major tourist attraction is comprised of four levels, with one of them serving over one thousand varieties of tea! Next, we visited the famous Meiji Shrine. Not only is the shrine famous, but one person who was touring the shrine is also very prominent. To our great surprise, Malala Yousafzai was attending a Summit in Japan, and we were lucky enough to cross paths with her. We were all in disbelief when we saw her. What an amazing coincidence it was that we were on a MUN trip and the youngest-ever UN Messenger of Peace was standing right before us. Another trip highlight was spending the afternoon in the Digital Art Museum where we walked through rooms filled with dynamic and interactive art that is constantly in motion. Towards the middle of our stay in Japan, we were able to see Mount. Fuji, stayed in a traditional Japanese hotel where we had the opportunity to wear Kimonos, and visited Matsumoto Castle. We all enjoyed the various food markets that we went to, as well as the vending machines which were filled with unique beverages. Our last day consisted of sightseeing at the Golden Pavilion and shopping time in the underground malls of Kyoto. We concluded our trip with a ride on the Bullet Train which was also quite an experience. Japan is an amazing country, and I will cherish the memories I made on this trip forever. Karen Gibbs once said, “Take every chance you get in life because some things only happen once.” Japan 2019 was an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience, one that I could only dream of not so long ago, and I am so grateful to everyone who made my dream come true.
