Volleyball Angels Win Senior BC Catholics

Our Angels bring home the BC Catholic Championship, hosted by Notre Dame this past weekend. After finishing second last year, our Angels put together a great team effort to win their second Championship since 2016, and third in the last seven years. The team dominated pool play, winning all four games without dropping a set before marching through the playoff round and clipping the host team, ND in the finals.
With the perfect pool results, Angels went into the playoff's ranked 1st. However, they faced adversity before the first serve, as the team was missing two pivotal outside hitters. The team started Day 2 playing very well in the quarter-finals, with a straight set victory versus St. John Brebeuf from Abbotsford. The Angels then faced the defending champion STM Knights of Burnaby in the semi-finals. The first set was controlled by the Angels from start to finish and ended with an LFA 25-21 first set victory. Momentum shifted in the second set, and STM started off "on fire", building a 10-1 lead. Undaunted, the LFA team re-set and worked hard to tie the score at 17. It was back and forth until LFA forced the play and won the set 25-23. The win sent LFA back to the finals for the second year in a row.

This years final featured the home squad of Notre Dame against our Angels in front of a loud and racous crowd. Unfazed, the Angels started strong and jumped out to a 6-2 lead. However, Notre Dame quickly battled back. It set the tone for an exciting, back-and-forth set, which LFA finally grabbed by the slimmest of margins, sneaking out a 25-23 win. The second set saw a repeat of a strong Angels start, but Notre Dame battled hard to gain a 12-8 advantage. That is when the strong Angel defense and serving took over and drove the Angels to a 24-20 lead. On the cusp of the Championships, Notre Dame pressed hard, getting the score to 24-23 until finally Elizabeth Lee '22 finished the set off with a kill. The celebration began!

It was a very special win since it was a true team victory. Everyone contributed to the championship. Special recognition went to Maddie Miller '20, who was selected to the All-star team and Chiara Mezzarobba '20, who was selected as the tournament MVP.
