Kelly Ma '19 and Mrs. Mills
As many of you know, Model United Nations is an educational replica of The United Nations, an intergovernmental organization that focuses on maintaining peace and friendships among countries globally.
After a month of practise and discussion of the procedures for MUN, a group of intelligent and eager LFA students found themselves at VYMUN Whistler, a beginner’s conference. For years, VYMUN served as the first official conference LFA delegates attended, exposing them to a world of debate, global diplomacy, and international relations.

Kelly Ma '19 had the pleasure of interviewing Lara Rebeiro on her experience at VYMUN, who won Best Delegate in her committee, the most prestigious award obtainable by a delegate. During a conference, delegates spend most of their time in committee along with a dais team. Lara describes her experience:
“Going into my first committee session I was a bit nervous, but I immediately felt welcomed by my dais and fellow delegates. Everyone was ecstatic to meet new people from different schools and were ready to discuss various topics that are relevant to our society. As well, the dais were extremely helpful and supportive in guiding us through the conference, offering us tips to make us better delegates along the way!”
As the committee sessions began to past, Lara found herself walking up to the stage to claim her Best Delegate award at the closing ceremony.
“All of the hard work and late nights spent doing research really paid off when I heard my name being called for this award. It was a true honour to have been chosen, and the feeling that all my effort had paid off is something I won’t forget.”
During the bus ride home from the conference, Lara reflected on her experience at VYMUN, and what she ultimately took away from her first conference.
“I was able to expand my knowledge about pressing issues that face our society today and learn so much about the country I represented. This conference allowed me to gain an insight into the vast world of Model UN, and achieve a new level of confidence in myself. Most importantly, I feel a sense of pride towards all my fellow classmates who attended the conference, as I have been able to make so many lasting memories, friendships, and connections.”
Although the conference is over, a sentence said by her dais seems to echo in Lara’s mind:
“Decorum delegates! That means you have to be quiet now, stop talking, and listen to us!!”
“MUN IS FUN” - Megan Tai, Outstanding Delegate as France on SOCHUM, VYMUN 2019
Congratulations to all!
