LFA Choral Department Hosts Avi Kaplan Honour Choir Festival

Ms. Mislang
If you are a Pentatonix fan, you already know about Avi Kaplan, the original bass member of the a capella group that won the third season of NBC's American television singing competition, The Sing Off.  This weekend over 200 high school and college-aged singers from around the Metro-Vancouver area participated in a two-day honour choir festival with the three-time Grammy Award-winning singer, composer and arranger hosted by Ms. Mislang and our LFA Choral Department.
The two-day festival included massed choir rehearsals led by festival conductor, John Byun (Director of Choral Activities from Riverside College in California) and Avi Kaplan. The festival culminated in a dynamic finale concert on Saturday evening at Fraserview Church in Richmond featuring the Honour Choir, as well as the choirs from Magee, Holy Cross, St. Thomas Aquinas and Windemere High Schools. Singing a capella arrangements of Avi's solo repertoire, as well as some familiar Pentatonix arrangements, participants in the festival had a fantastic time singing together and getting a chance to meet and perform with the popular artist.

Since leaving Pentatonix in 2017, Avi has been working with John Byun, bringing the Avi Kaplan Honour Choir Festival experience to high school-aged singers to cities in the United States, and now, Canada. In addition to the festival, Avi Kaplan is also involved in the A Capella Academy, an intensive summer program held in Los Angeles "designed to train, foster, and inspire the bright young minds of contemporary a cappella".  Sofia and Maisey Perelonia '20, two of our grade 12 Angels had the privilege of attending the A Capella camp this past summer.

A special congratulations goes out to the 22 singers from our LFA Choral Program who had the opportunity to particiapte in such a wonderful performance opportunity and a huge thanks goes out to the choir parents and student volunteers who helped on site at the festival this weekend!
