Public Speaking Update

Mary Duffy
Congratulations to Natalie Viegas who made Finals for Interpretative Reading and Impromptu Speech at Public Speaking Provincials. Natalie came in sixth overall in the province thus qualifying to compete in the National Public Speaking Championships to be hosted in Winnipeg via Zoom in February. Congratulations also to her LFA teammates Maria Zen Baxter, Maya Mior and Audrey Braun who a month earlier won medals at Internationals with Maria placing fifth overall and qualifying to compete at Worlds in South Africa – most likely via Zoom - in the spring.
Ms. Duffy and Ms. Harrison would like to give a big thanks to Joyce Chen who came fifth at Worlds this past summer hosted by Australia via Zoom who has been helping with coaching and mentoring. Also thank yous are due to alumna Sandy Pang, Asha Mior, Jeanna Pillainayagam and Katarina Szulc who have assisted with coaching via Zoom.
It’s been a very busy fall for public speaking and we would like to thank Madame St. Arnaud for hosting the junior bilingual Poetry in Voice competition with Sienna Fabbro as our bilingual champion. Both Sienna and our English champion, Kristina Bedford were filmed by Ms. Diakow and the videos are currently. under consideration by award winning poets who are judging at the national level. It will be a busy winter and spring with Nationals and Worlds in addition to Senior Poetry and Voice, the Optimist International Oratorical competition as well as the Hullabaloo youth slam poetry in festival. This year individuals as well as our LFA team led by Melanie So and Anya Trevedi are invited to submit videos.
Thanks to all our talented speakers including our newest angel grade eight speakers who along with our champions yesterday bravely shared some excellent Christmas storytelling via Zoom.
