Another Careers Day Success

With grads from 1987 to as recent as 2011 and including one current parent, LFA’s annual Careers Day was another success! We are always blessed to have so many willing volunteers come speak to the grade 10, 11, and 12 students and share of their time and experience.
Susie da Silva ‘98, a Videojournalist for CBC, arrived with her video camera over her shoulder; Mary (Tsiandoulas) Burgers ‘92 came armed with real life examples of her Interior Design work; our own Granola Girl, April (Tioseco) Bellia ‘92, showed up with samples and swag; and, Natasha Carpio ‘92 regailed the girls of when David Beckham stayed at her hotel. We were lucky enough to have two engineers join us this year, and a wildfire fighter who was part of the incredible effort this past summer fighting wildfires across BC. These are only just some of the smart and talented women who shared with our girls.

Perspective from a speaker
Curious about speaking? This is what first time speaker, Mary (Tsiandoulas) Burgers ‘92, had to say:
  • Before Careers Day, when was the last time you set foot in LFA?
    When I graduated in 1992.

  • What stood out most for you coming back to the school?
It is remarkable how different the school looks, with the convent gone and the current state of the art facilities and school features, however it still feels very welcoming and cozy despite its physical expansion.

  • Why did you agree to speak at Careers Day?
In general there is a need to promote creativity and imagination… in whatever profession one chooses to pursue, it is what inspires innovation, affects the quality of life in our cities and communities and, in turn, our ability to generate social and economic growth.

There is enormous value in a Liberal Arts Degree, especially when coupled with a skill set such as Marketing, Business, Social Media, Graphic Design, Data Analysis, Computer Programming...your appeal in the job market is sky high.

  • What did you enjoy most about Careers Day?
It was amazing to run into some girls who I graduated with (Susan Day, April Belia, Ally Day all class of ‘92) and to feel the same connection and warmth despite so many years going by.

We were spirited and lively and had a lot of fun in high school, always encouraged to be our very best selves... and I think it’s a testament to what we are now doing in our careers.
