World Championships for Public Speaking Angel

Katarina Szulc ´19 is one of just eight Canadians who qualified for the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championship to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in April 2018.
Katarina has been an avid public speaker and debater at Little Flower since her grade eight year. She has attended numerous competitions through the years, where she's been very successful and won a number of awards. In Katarina’s first year of public speaking, she qualified for Provincials where she won a gold medal for interpretive reading. While she was little disappointed not to advance to nationals, her performance at such a young age was clear indication of her affinity to the discipline.

Those early competitions is where Katarina set her goal to qualify for Worlds (WIDPSC). She dedicated herself to improving her public speaking skills and the content that she presented at competitions. In ninth and tenth grade she qualified to nationals and, in grade ten, attended internationals. However, despite her commitment, qualifying for Worlds (WIDPSC) proved elusive.

Katarina persisted and committed herself to advancing to the prestigious competition held in South Africa in 2018. In October of this year Katarina and her LFA coach (who she holds in very high regard) Ms. Duffy, made the trek to Winnipeg, Manitoba for nationals. Performing her very best, Katarina earned her spot on Team Canada. Katarina and Ms. Duffy were both ecstatic at this news, as their hard work had paid off. Katarina is the first person in LFA history to make represent Canada at Worlds and she plans to,0" perform flawlessly, and represent LFA admirably."

Anyone who knows Katarina will know her approach. Her speeches are authentic, honest and is she's known to add a cultural twist, which makes her entertaining and refreshing among her peers. Through her public speaking Katarina has realized that she would like to pursue Journalism once she's finished at LFA. Indeed, expanding on her genuine interest in the field, she has been accepted into the University of Southern California collegiate summer program for a month to take part in a Journalism course. Katarina plans to confidently represent LFA on an international level and become very successful in the process.

In speaking to Katarina about her, she wanted to especailly thank her teachers Mary Duffy, Vy Tran, Krista Bedard and Simone Bazille for their immense help. Thanks, too, to Tiffany Chen '19, who competed as a teammate with Katarina in Winnipeg.

Congratulations and good luck Katarina!
