Angels At Public Speaking Nationals

Jeanna Pillainayagam ‘19 and Asha Mior ‘20 recently returned from competing at the 2018 National Public Speaking Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Nationals featured the very best public speakers from across the country, with a number of competitors who had even competed and won at the Worlds level in previous years.
Jeanna and Asha qualified for this event last November at Public Speaking Provincials, where they placed first and third in the province respectively.

Jeanna has been participating in public speaking since Grade 8, attending and winning awards at tournaments such as Provincials, Nationals, and Internationals in past years. In Grade 8, she was included in the Top 10 junior speakers in the province, winning silver in the Persuasive Speaking Category, gold in the Impromptu Speaking Category, and advancing to the Junior Nationals. This year, she reached the pinnacle of her public speaking career thus far, being named the top senior public speaker in BC. Her dedication to the art of public speaking has led her to many opportunities outside of the school. This includes serving on the Vancouver-Granville Youth Council with MP Jody Wilson-Raybould.

Asha attended her first public speaking competition in Grade 9 and has loved the art ever since. In her first year, she was named top junior speaker in BC, and proceeded to place 5th at junior speech nationals. This year, she placed 3rd at Speech Provincials, joining Jeanna at Senior Nationals, where she made finals in the Interpretive Reading category. Asha is not only an exceptional public speaker and debater, but also an environmentalist. She is currently one of the top 25 environmental youth activists in Canada, and strongly believes that her participation in public speaking has helped her to express her passion for this important topic.

Asha and Jeanna would like to thank Ms. Duffy for her support and dedication to help them prepare for tournaments. Thanks also to Mrs. Bedard, Ms. Tran, the other LFA public speakers, as well as grads Sandy Pang ‘16 and Stephenie Pillainayagam ‘13.
