2018 Distinguished Alumnae Announcement

Little Flower Academy is very proud of two very special alumnae: our recipients of the 2018 Distinguished Alumnae award. Congratulations to Clare Smart ‘91 and Emily Cordonier ’01, who are this year's inductees. Clare has demonstrated extraordinary community service, both through her successful career in policing and through her personal and deeply committed humanitarian outreach work. Emily reached the highest international levels in her sport, captaining the Canadian volleyball team, before bridging her athletic success into a successful broadcast journalism career.
Clare Smart ’91 is a Staff Sergeant with the Calgary Police Service and a truly extraordinary humanitarian, volunteer and advocate. Clare volunteered to work with the United Nations in Darfur, applying her professional policing expertise as the only Canadian female police trainer with the United Nations Africa Mission in Darfur. Working in refugee camps in her free time, she became involved in the charity Confident Children out of Conflict (CCC) and helped establish the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts of El Fasher, Sudan. When her United Nations mission ended, she returned regularly to Darfur to support CCC's work and to continue her support of the scouts and guides. In Calgary, she became actively engaged in a young offender-organized humanitarian program: Project Africa. As a Director, she travelled to Sierra Leone to inspect a school building funded by the  Calgary young offender who raised the funds to build it. She has also been actively involved with the charities Samaritan’s Purse and Toms One for One, both in Canada and by travelling to Costa Rica for projects on the ground. Clare has used her experience to help the Sudanese and East African immigrant community in Alberta through youth mentorship programs, through her work with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and through pioneering the highly successful Calgary Police Cadet Corps and Calgary Police Auxiliary Cadet Program. Unsurprisingly, Clare has won numerous prestigious awards for her work, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. Clare lives in Calgary with her husband and their two sons.

Emily Cordonier ‘01 is Little Flower Academy’s inaugural athletic inductee into the Distinguished Alumnae Program for her athletic accomplishments. Emily showed early promise of her exemplary volleyball skills, earning a spot on LFA’s senior volleyball team in her Grade 9 year. LFA won two Provincial bronze medals during Emily’s time on the team, and she was named Tournament MVP at one of the Provincial Championships. Though recruited by many universities, Emily opted to stay close to home, playing all five years of her eligibility at UBC, where the team made it the national finals twice. Emily was a multi-year Canada West All Star and All Canadian as well as being named Canada West Player of the Year in her graduating year at UBC. She made Canada’s National Volleyball team, where she served as Captain for three of her five years on the team. She went on to play two years of professional volleyball in France. For her athletic accomplishments, Emily has won many awards. She won the Quigley Award in 2005 as the top student-athlete in U SPORTS women's volleyball; the Marilyn Pomfret Award in 2005 as UBC's Female Athlete of the Year; and, in 2017, was inducted into UBC’s Sports Hall of Fame. After retiring from competitive playing, Emily successfully transitioned into broadcast journalism. She has worked as a producer with Global TV, a writer with Ottawa Life Magazine and was a TV reporter from both the Rio and London Olympics. Emily lives in Ottawa with her husband, son and daughter. She continues to coach volleyball in her free time.
