LFA Hosts Amazing Model UN

Rosemary Vayalikunnel '19
The 3rd iteration of LFAMUN took place on Saturday, October 13th at LFA. This excellent day conference, organized by our very own LFA students, gave delegates a chance to practice their public speaking and debate skills, review MUN procedure and have some fun!
This year's conference was bigger than the last, with over 140 delegates from LFA, Vancouver College and Fraser Heights. As one of the first conferences of the school year, LFAMUN was an opportunity for all delegates, especially new ones, to experience MUN, learn more about their topics, and prepare for future conferences.

LFAMUN III offered a wide range of committees and topics, including the World Health Organization, the Disarmament and International Security Committee, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the European Union and the United Nations Security Council. Each committee, guided by a spectacular dais team, produced high levels of debate, well-written resolution papers, and effective solutions to international issues. Delegates learned the importance of collaboration, cooperation and compromise. Students from all three schools won awards, but it was difficult for directors to decide since everyone spoke so well. A special congratulations to our LFA delegates who won awards, including Best Research to Joyce Chen ‘21 and Taylor VanMarrewyk ‘20, Honourable Mention to Tiffany Shiao ‘19, Outstanding Delegate to Maia Lan ‘20, and Best Delegate to Caroline Wang ‘19.

Delegates truly loved LFAMUN. They enjoyed making new friends and discussing global conflicts with like-minded individuals:
  • “LFAMUN was a great experience for me! I learned how to think on my feet, problem solve and work with other delegates.” -Joyce Chen, LFA ‘21
  • “LFAMUN was the first ever MUN conference I attended, and I was very skeptical about speaking on world affairs with no prior knowledge. On top of making a plethora of new friends, the overall experience of this one-day conference was more than enough to create long lasting memories. This conference is the reason I plan to attend more in the future.”-Trevor Chan, VC ‘19
  • “As the first conference of the year, LFAMUN gave delegates from my school a wonderful opportunity to test their abilities in a beginner-friendly environment.”-Eli Lee, FH ‘19
We are very thankful to have such an amazing leadership team this year, with Cindy Gao as Secretary-General, Rosemary Vayalikunnel as Director-General, Jeanna Pillainayagam as USG of Delegate Affairs, Serena Lam as USG of Conference and Natalie Ng as USG of Logistics. All the Model UN leaders had an important role in the conference as well, assisting in chairing committees and preparing for the conference. Everyone did an amazing job! We were also very fortunate to have Mrs. Wingson as our keynote speaker once again. She talked about ‘tipping the scales in your favour’ and discussed the importance of professionalism, revealing many important things she learned as a well-established lawyer. Her inspiring words inspirited delegates for the day of debate.

We are also very grateful for the eleven grade 9 students who volunteered as pages for LFAMUN. They were Maria Zen-Baxter, Lara Rebeiro, Gemma Eldridge, Audrey Foy, Kate Lynn Hanna, Aleksandra Hermary, Clarice Moura, Michelle Xiao, Kim Tuguinay, Athina
Law and Maya Mior. We can’t wait to see these new Model UN delegates in action next year! Finally, a huge thank you to all the LFA delegates who attended the conference. You all did a wonderful job!

LFAMUN will help prepare the 51 grade 10 students attending VYMUN in Whistler next weekend and the 28 students going to Princeton University MUN in New Jersey in November, as well as the 3 MUN conferences after Christmas. What a great conference for the start of the year!

Post Note from Mrs. Mills -

Thank you so much to all of the MUN Club leaders who ran this conference most competently. Your dedication, organizational skills and knowledge were most impressive! The Secretariat members displayed great cohesion and unity making all elements of the conference work with fluidity!
