Excellent Princeton University Model UN Awards in November

Trisha-Mae Capistrano '20 and Deborah Wong '20
On Thursday, November 15, we arrived in New Jersey for the opening ceremonies of the Princeton Model United Nations Conference. PMUNC hosted over 1,000 delegates from all over the world at the Hilton East Brunswick, which was a quick drive from the picturesque campus of Princeton University.
Before committee session on Friday, November 16, we had the chance to tour the 272-year-old grounds and buildings of Princeton University, and of course, make a stop at the university store to get some Princeton attire. The campus was just beautiful and the sun even managed to peak through and shine on the dusting of snow the day we visited.

The conference ran exceptionally smoothly, despite unexpected snowfall which resulted in a slight delay of the Opening Ceremonies. The professionalism of the Princeton staff was upheld during the four days, who tailored the schedule multiple times to ensure a well-run conference.

Four days filled with riveting debate, concise resolutions, and an exciting delegate social made PMUNC an unforgettable experience. Little Flower Academy brought unrivalled diplomacy, public speaking skills and debate to committee sessions. Not only were we able to discuss pressing issues our world currently faces, but we were also able to make lasting friendships with delegates who came from all over the world.

With such a diverse committee selection, our Angels had the opportunity to delegate in general assemblies such as The Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN), specialized agencies like The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and crisis committees, namely the UN Security Council (UNSC). These were run by amiable, proficient, and enthusiastic Princeton undergraduates who were able to find a balance between professionalism and having fun throughout our seven committee sessions. They engaged us in compelling, structured debates as well as with entertaining activities such as delegate talent shows to wrap up the conference. We could not be more thankful for their careful and thorough months of preparation leading up to this conference.

At the end of it all, five girls from LFA were bestowed well-deserved awards. Christy Anna Chung ‘19, who represented New Zealand on the Pacific Islands Forum, received a verbal commendation. Trisha-mae Capistrano ‘20 and Deborah Wong ‘20, who teamed up as a double delegation, represented Belgium on ECOFIN and won the Best Poosition Paper award. In addition, Alison Chan ‘21 and Renee Tung ‘21, who were the delegation of Italy on DISEC, won the Best Position Paper award.

The Princeton Model UN conference definitely set the standard high for all conferences in the near future. It was also undoubtedly an eye-opening conference for us LFA delegates as we had the chance to witness just how competitive the world of Model UN can get. This strong conference, however, certainly allowed us to really develop and improve our MUN skills as we all had to be very assertive, speak confidently, think quickly on the spot, and raise our placards as much and as fast as we could.

Prior to the conference, we were able to also have a few days in New York where we were able to some interesting things including a visit to the United Nations Building.  We toured the UN building, and even got to sit down in various committee rooms such as the Economic and Social Council and the Trusteeship Council where we were told people like Malala among others had spoken. What made our experience so real and what fascinated we Model UN enthusiasts the most, was the fact that we were unable to visit the Security Council because it was in session at the time discussing the issues surrounding Syria!

We also saw the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Chelsea Market and the Metropolitan Museum where we viewed the fascinating exhibits, such as the halls of Ancient Egypt, American Art, Roman sculptures and the Dutch Masterpieces. Immediately after our initial morning tour the first day,  we quickly made our way to Radio City Music Hall to catch the Christmas Spectacular staring the Radio City Rockettes. The following day was also full of activities, starting with a visit to Rockefeller Center to see the ice rink and giant Christmas tree, to watch the beautiful musical, "Anastasia" and then to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where there was a gorgeous shrine of our school’s patron saint St. Therese of the Little Flower. We also had some free time on Fifth Avenue to explore other famous landmarks some of us had only previously seen in movies such as Central Park and the Plaza Hotel.

Once again, congratulations to all the participants and award winners at PMUNC 2018! Thank you to Mrs. Mills for organizing this wonderfully educational and exciting Model UN conference trip and for Mr. Coady for being such a great chaperone!
