Choir Supports May's Place: Your Help is Requested

Ms. Mislang
Help our Senior Choir's fundraising challenge for May's Place Hospice
As a participating choir in Yuel Duel (Vancouver's largest Christmas Carolling Competition), members of our Senior Choir will join 15 other choirs in an exciting muiscal experience on the sidewalks of Gastown this Thursday, December 6th to raise money for May's Place Hospice. As the event draws closer, we are asking members of our LFA community to consider donating to this worthwhile cause.

By donating to our LFA SENIOR CHOIR PAGE we can help raise awareness and support May's Place, a hospice in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside that provides compassinate end-of-life care for our city's most vulnerable. Also, come down and support us on Thursday, December 6th!

About May’s Place:

For 28 years May’s Place has offered care and compassion to vulnerable and marginalized people in the Downtown Eastside, giving them a chance to enjoy comfort and dignity in their last days. May’s Place delivers end-of-life care to over 50 people each year, ensuring that their last days are filled with dignity, warmth, and kindness. Often times our patients’ lives have been touched by extreme poverty, homelessness, abuse, mental health issues, and addictions. At May’s Place, they are welcomed warmly, respected, and surrounded by friends, family, and caregivers. For some residents, it’s the first time they’ve had a warm bed to sleep in or a room to themselves. This six-bed facility provides a peaceful environment filled with natural light and home comforts. Staff are trained to provide care to people with complex issues, offering a range of supports that are particular to their needs, including family reunification, reconnection with faith or culture and options for long-term care when needed. May’s Place is the only hospice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and is operated by The Bloom Group, a registered charity which has served the community for over 50 years.

See Ms. Mislang's Interview Below as she talks about Yuel Duel to the JP McGlynn, Communications Director of the Gastown Business Society:

What brought you into Yule Duel?

MM: When Yuel Duel first got started, I had received a call from the organizers to consider entering the competition. However, we always had a conflict with dates and such. I've heard so many things about the success of the event, that in June I wanted to make sure that we could make it this year so I checked the website repeatedly for the date so I could fit it in to our performance schedule this year. We are so excited that we finally get be part of it!

What is the musical style of the repertoire?

MM:  We will be singing some traditional carols and familiar Christmas songs so people can sing along with us.  Before Yuel Duel, we are spending the day carolling at Ronald McDonald House and the Yaletown House, so it'll be great to have a chance to run through our carols before the evening event and get ourselves in the holiday spirit.

What do you think your odds are of winning?

MM:  There are so many amazing choirs this year that it's hard to predict a winner. We have such a talented choral scene here in Vancouver and the caliber of the children's choirs, school choirs, adult choirs and community choirs in this area will be definitely hard to beat. Since it's our first year participating in Yuel Duel, our goal is to have fun and spread a bit of Christmas cheer. I also love the idea of "Carolling for a Cause". So often, we are focused on the performance but with Yuel Duel our focus will be to spread the fundrasing campaign for May's Place Hospice. We are crossing our fingers that we can be one of the top fundraising choirs.

Are you going to have a unique spin this year to give you an edge?

MM:  I think what's special about our choir is that we hope to move people with our music.  I'm lucky to have such amazing students and singers at Little Flower Academy and oftentimes when I work with them, I forget that we are a high school choir. These ladies have so much maturity, depth and understanding that sometimes I forget that they are only in Grade 11 and 12. I think you will be inspired by their spirit, like I am.

How can people see The Little Flower Academy perform outside of Yule Duel?

MM:  Our choirs will participating in a number of local choir festivals and workshops throughout the year including the West Coast Choir Festival, Kiwanis Festival and the Kiwanis Fraser Valley Festival. Additionally in the spring, our chamber choir will be traveling to New York to sing at the National Youth Choir Festival at Carnegie Hall in April. The girls are very excited about this performance. All are welcome to check us out on youtube or even come along to our final concert of the year at Canadian Memorial Church on Friday, May 10th at 7pm with Guest Conductor, Dr. Adam Con.
