Class of 1957 Reunion

In 1957, our teacher, then Sister Mary Eileen (AKA Sr. Eileen Kelly) made a strong suggestion that we have a ten-year reunion....which we did....and she came along! After that, we met every ten years, then every 5 years, and then for the past many years, at least yearly.
The catalysts of our gatherings are Janet Faulds, from Toronto, and Marilyn (Finch) Swartz, of Oakland, California. The two of them are very flexible as to when they visit, so whenever it can be arranged that there is a crossover time, we have a “reunion”. This year, it looked like Marilyn was going to have to miss the event, but she pulled it all together and flew up in the morning and back in the evening to be with her “special girls” just for the day!!!

Last year, some of the girls from the class expressed a desire to tour the new school, for many had not stepped inside the grounds since graduating in 1957. Ben Fitch obliged us with a very welcoming tour of the buildings, grounds and Mr Cannon’s “orchard” (apple trees grafted from trees from Victoria’s St Ann’s Academy). I must admit I felt a little like “Eve” in the Garden of Eden as I was urged by my classmates to pick the first apple!

After a few “photo ops,” we headed to the always popular Senova Restaurant, in Kerrisdale, for a scrumptious lunch, and were joined by a few more from our class for the lunch. Also at our lunch were Janina (Runcewicz) Freyman, of the Class of ’55, who was getting ideas for her class’ 60th reunion this year and Margaret (St. Martin) Bubenik from Gig Harbor, Washington, who attended LFA from Grade 6 until half way through Grade 11, before leaving due to her father’s employment transfer to Seattle, Washington.

Highlights of the luncheon (besides the food) were the exchanges of photos from years gone by - some in black and white. Jane (Boyle) Young produced a complete programme of the musical we produced that year with Vancouver College, Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Mikado.” The programme and the photos she shared will be stored in the new archives at LFA. Janet produced photos that were mailed to her from the years she was unable to attend. Plans were hatched for our 60th (in two years) with Anne (Brunton) Sims offering her oceanfront home on Gabriola Island for the event. We are looking forward to meeting again!!
