Over the weekend the LFA senior basketball team played a hard fought tournament in Victoria, winning three of four including an exciting overtime game to round out the weekend.
In the event of snow on Saturday, the school will make every attempt to administer the entrance exam as scheduled with a 9:00 a.m. start. Parents are asked to check road conditions and leave extra time for safe travel.
For as long as anyone here can remember, the Advent season has been an opportunity for our students to reach out to our wider community. This year's we've taken the opportunity to reach out and work with the Catholic women's ministry on the downtown eastside called Mary's Place.
Our Senior Volleyball Angels peaked at the right moment and played inspired volleyball throughout the AAA Volleyball Provincial Championships to run away with the Championship this past weekend. It was as close to perfect volleyball as could be hoped for. They didn't lose a single set in the playoffs after winning all three games to top their pool.
The BC Ministry of Education recently shared some statistics with us on last year's Class of 2016 and they are truly extraordinary. Every graduate from last year was recognized with BC Honours Standing. The Ministry also awarded more than 75% of the Class of 2016 with the BC Achievement Scholarship.
Twenty five LFA students attended the CONNECT MUN Model UN conference held at the Hyatt Hotel, Vancouver on the weekend of the 18-20th November. This group were very strong in their participation and they represented LFA very well.
Because of the Snow Day today, we have postponed the Dress Down Day to tomorrow, Tuesday, December 6. Bring your donation of $2 or more - all of the proceeds go to Youth in Action to pay for our Downtown Eastside initiatives. Thank you for your support!
Our LFA/VC school play, Crazy For You has been a true success this year. After a week of packed performances, tonight's closing show has just sold out!
Our seventh annual Grape Escape was once again a sold out affair thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. For this year’s wine and food pairing journey, guests travelled to Spain under the guiding hand of sommelier Lara Victoria, who is also mom to three LFA alumnae.
It is a delight to share a story about one of our students whose actions reflect the values we hold dearly at the school. We recently shared a story about Jayna Lunny '21 taking part in Chopped Canada Junior. She won, which was very exciting. The post-script to her winning is, however, a much better story, which was told recently in The Province newspaper. Take a moment to read A lesson in giving from a 13-year-old superchef.
Our Senior Volleyball Angels have come charging out of the gates at the AAA Volleyball Provincial Championships. Three straigh wins has them advance in top place out of their group.
Can you believe it has been 30 years??? We hope that you will join us to share smiles, friendships, stories, photos and more with us on Saturday, May 6th, 2017.
Congratulations to the six members of LFA’s public speaking team who represented the school so wonderfully this past weekend at the Provincials held at St. John’s School.
This past weekend 32 teams, representing seven zones from across BC converged in Delta vying to cap their season with a Junior Volleyball Provincial Championship. Our Angels played some inspired team volleyball to finish ninth in BC.
In order to accommodate a staff professional development workshop, we will be having a delayed start on Wednesday, November 30th. Homeroom will start at 10:00 a.m. We apologize for the short notice. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, the LFA Parent Auxiliary will host the annual Spring Fling – Gala Unplugged – a gala without the ‘glitz’. This year's event will be bigger than last year and we’re sure to raise the roof with our live party band “Posing till Closing”. All funds raised will support our Annual Fund and Technology Campaign. The Parents' Auxiliary will be reaching out shortly for help soliciting silent and live auction donations.
Please note that we have been advised that a film crew will be closing Nanton Avenue and disrupting normal traffic flow near Little Flower Academy from 8am to noon on Monday, November 28th, 2016.

The last weekend in October saw 60 grade 10 Model UN students attend VYMUN (or WPGA Model UN) in Whistler. This conference comprises 300 students from many schools in BC and it is now a conference for beginner and experienced Model UN students. Special congratulations goes to the 11 students who won awards at this conference. This was a great achievement given all LFA students were first time Model UNers.
In this, our 90th year of operation, we find ourselves at the end of our most recent Strategic Plan. During the past five years, the character of Little Flower Academy has shone as we’ve invested in making the student experience extraordinary. We've done so while navigating significant changes like a transition from one Principal to another; the introduction of the LFA Foundation; and, perhaps most importantly, ensuring the independent, Catholic foundation of the school with the appointment of our independent Canonical sponsor LFA Stewardship. We’ve accomplished all this success with grace and poise.
This past May, our very own Jayna Lunny '21 was selected to be a contestant on Chopped Canada Junior, Season 1. The show will air on Sunday, November 20th.
The recent Stanford Model UN experience and conference on the 11- 13th of November left many impressions and was a wonderful experience. The first impression was aesthetic, as the campus, with its Spanish architectural elements and beautiful spruce trees, is one of great beauty. This conference could be classified as the most academic of all Model UN conferences that LFA attends because of the university prep schools competing, the high level of debate, the detailed and professional background guides and the very capable and knowledgeable chairs. It was a wonderful learning experience.
Our Junior Volleyball Angels continue to impress, taking the League Championship over rival STM in a fantastic game that showed the best of both teams.
LFA's Bantam Volleyball team has shown that the future is extraordinarily bright for the volleyball program at LFA. The heartbreaking semi-final, third set loss (13-15) to St. Pat's was only the second loss of the season for our Angels, who before Tuesday had put together an incredible 26-1 season.
LFA hosted the regional playoffs last night, with both our Junior team and our Bantam (grade 8) team vying for a spot in the finals. Our LFA Junior Field Hockey team capped an incredible season with a convincing 3-1 win over Crofton in the City Finals. City Champions is the perfect finish for this group of athletes. With 28 days of rain in October, the junior field hockey team dubbed wet weather their lucky charm. In total the girls won nine games, and tied three, leaving them with the amazing title of “undefeated” this season.
Every autumn, Bettina Sy '97 (from our Alumnae Executive) works with the school to bring in successful alumnae and their colleagues from their professional network. It gives our students an opportunity to hear from--and ask questions of--successful female role models from a wide array of industries.
Our Junior Field Hockey team continued its unbeaten run this season with a convincing win over a really good team from Notre Dame. The win in the Vancouver semi-finals means LFA will compete for the League Championship tomorrow.
It took three sets to overcome a determined Notre Dame, but our Angels emerged as this year's Senior Volleyball BC Catholics Champions. Our Angel's capped off the 25th annual BC Catholic girl's volleyball tournament with our fourth title and, impressively, our second title in the last five years.
With their Provincial Championships hopes dashed in the shoot-out loss earlier in the day, there could have a let-down by our Senior A Field Hockey Angels. It will be no surprise to anyone who knows this group that they gave everything they had until the final whistle. In fact, the girls really viewed this game as a blessing--an opportunity to end the season on a high note, playing great hockey, and letting our five senior players enjoy every moment of their final high school field hockey game.
Our Senior A Field Hockey Angels travelled to Vancouver Island to play for their spot at the AA Provincial Championships. In a quirky berthing formula, LFA needed two wins against the North Shore and Vancouver Island wildcard opponents to claim their spot at Provincials. Despite being the dominant team against North Shore's Seycove, the game ended a 0-0 draw and the decider fell to a shoot-out, where only one goal was scored (by Seycove) in the ten attempts by the two teams.
From November 2nd through 5th, St. George's will be presenting Inherit the Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. Tickets are still available for the show!

The following letter regarding the transfer of Canonical Sponsorship of Little Flower Academy is delivered to our LFA community from Sister Marie Zarowny, SAA, Provincial Co-Leader on behalf of the Sisters of St. Ann.
We're really excited about this year's 90th Anniversary BBQ celebration plans. Clearly, so is our LFA community. We've never seen so many RSVPs for an event. Current families, of course, but also Sisters of St. Ann, alumnae, past parents, and past faculty. Have you RSVPed?
For the upcoming school year, Little Flower Academy will be moving to a daily block rotation schedule. A daily rotation will result in fewer students missing the same block for sporting events each week and less class time disruption as many field trips can be planned around lunch and last block.
Senior Volleyball Tryouts will take place after school in the Gym - all those interested are encouraged to come to tryouts. If you have any questions, or will be missing this tryout please see or email Mr. Ballard (ballardr@lfabc.org).

In doing so, and by saving on printing and postage, we've moved to a really lovely annual alumnae publication. We're really excited about the all new La Petite Fleur!
The best part is that it was mailed yesterday. Keep an eye out for your copy, coming very soon!

One nice sunny April day in 2016, 87 students from LFA and VC came together for the first ever one day LFA Model UN conference. This day came about because the LFA Model UN Club leaders thought that the younger members of the LFA MUN Club would benefit from another conference before competing at other conferences in the next academic year. 56 LFA students signed up almost as soon as the conference was announced. Leaders then thought of inviting VC to add interest and competition.
Little Flower Academy is truly blessed with a clear mission and vision. The legacy of the Sisters of St Ann at LFA is infused in our culture and still guides the school to this day. With so many of our alumnae having a positive impact on their families, their community and on our wider society, the school and the Alumnae Executive launched the Distinguished Alumnae program in 2015 to acknowledge those in our community whose impact has been profound.
This year we are very excited to announce two recipients of our Distinguished Alumnae award. We wish to acknowledge and congratulate Sister Eileen Kelly and Patricia Marsden-Dole ’63 as our 2016 Distinguished Alumnae. Alumnae from many years will know the impact that Sister Kelly had on our school as a teacher and as the Principal, as well as her impact on the wider community serving as a Sister of St Ann. Patricia will be well known to her Class of 1963, who are very close. She has been a trail blazer for women serving in Canadian Foreign Service, a scholar, and a tireless leader in social justice in her adopted home community of Ottawa.
Members from our LFA Chamber Choir recently traveled to Nashville, TN to participate in the WorldStrides Heritage Festival for high school instrumental and choral groups. The mission and vision established by the Sisters of St Ann for Little Flower Academy is so strongly felt here that one might take for granted how it resonates in the wider community. The work of the Sisters of St Ann was recently highlighted on the front page of the Vancouver Sun.
The LFA Model UN group that travelled to Rome for Harvard's Model UN conference this Spring Break has excelled on many levels. All of our students represented LFA so very well. One of the Secretariat members came to me after the second committee session saying that he had heard from many members on different committees who commented on the strength and eloquence of the LFA delegates at the conference.
Our Gala committee has decided this year to shake things up a little, or rather a lot! Kick of your shoes, grab your blue jeans and join us for a decidedly "UN-GALA". Starting at 7pm, in the LFA Auditorium, the evening will feature exquisite canapés catered by our favourite LFA chef extraordinaire, "Chef Paul", wine graciously sponsored by Mission Hill Family Estate Winery, games, prizes, silent and live auctions and dancing with music and DJ services from Beyond Sound (of Father/Daughter Dance fame).

A few years back, we believe LFA became the first independent school alumnae association in Vancouver to run a curling bonspiel. Perhaps it was the shrieks of laughter or maybe it was dreams of Winter Olympics to come, but the result was a quickly sold out event. Ever since, we've been asked when we'll do it again. Good news: the LFA Alumnae Curling Bonspiel is back!
Demetra Maragos '15 was faced with the difficult choice between Ryerson University or UBC. Though an accomplished singer, Demetra is also an elite volleyball player and was looking to play varsity volleyball. She's made her way onto the Ryerson team and was recently profiled in their student newspaper, The Eyeopener.

This year's Junior Angels Basktball team has a younger look than some of the teams past. Of the nine players, seven are 9th graders. However, they move up to the Junior team with the experience of finishing second in last year's Bantam Provincials, which should bode well, despite now facing older players on every team.
