The Burnaby North Basketball Tournament landed two AA teams in the gold medal game. Britannia, currently ranked 5th in the province, up against our LFA Angels who sit outside out the top 10. While LFA settled for silver, it was a fantastic game to finish off a brilliant tournament for the Angels.
Our 2018 Home for the Holidays welcomed so many alumnae back, we had to put out more seats for Mass! Our Class of 2018 came out in huge numbers, creating a real buzz to the reception. As graduates young and old mingled with their former teachers and our grade 12's during the reception, the sense of community really resonated.
In the battle of 26th Street, the Angels were energized by the return of Kayla Canama ’19 after missing last season due to injury and put in a fantastic performance.
Help our Senior Choir's fundraising challenge for May's Place Hospice As a participating choir in Yuel Duel (Vancouver's largest Christmas Carolling Competition), members of our Senior Choir will join 15 other choirs in an exciting muiscal experience on the sidewalks of Gastown this Thursday, December 6th to raise money for May's Place Hospice. As the event draws closer, we are asking members of our LFA community to consider donating to this worthwhile cause.

LFA's Grade 10's had an astounding weekend at Whistler's Model UN conference, walking away with a number of individual awards and a very prestigious delegation award.
Little Flower Academy’s Senior Field Hockey Angels settle for fifth in British Columbia after a fantastic AA Provincial Championship, where they only lost a single game. The team came together at the right time, playing some truly inspired field hockey. The highlight of their tournament emerged in two truly astonishing games against JL Crowe, from Trail, BC.
The distinguished Alumni awards celebrate accomplishments in areas such as community development, lifelong learning, business innovation, excellence in a sport or someone who has done extraordinary work in their field. We eagerly seek nominations by November 30th for the 2019 Distinguished Alumnae. Last year we celebrated Clare Smart '91 and Emily Cordonier '01 for their humanitarian work and excellence in sport.

The 3rd iteration of LFAMUN took place on Saturday, October 13th at LFA. This excellent day conference, organized by our very own LFA students, gave delegates a chance to practice their public speaking and debate skills, review MUN procedure and have some fun!
It has been really fun for many of us at LFA to watch the amount of attention and publicity that Kat Jayme '06 has received for her recent film, Finding Big Country. Not the least of which is seeing LFA basketball footage in the trailers! The film had an enthralling world premier at the VIFF. In addition to a planned second showing, they've added another because of the demand.
With our Senior Volleyball team off to a brilliant start and winning at a torrid pace, they are starting to get noticed. Their recent performance, winning the Elite Division at the UBC Mizuno Invitational Tournament got them highlighted in Varsity Letters (a website dedicated solely to telling the stories of local student-athletes and coaches).
The Senior A Field Hockey Angels were perfect at the UBC Tournament, winning each of their games and capping it with a convincing win in the gold medal game over a capable and determined Argyle team. The win gave them a repeat championship at this tournament.
The Senior Angels played--and won--the second tournament of the year this past weekend. At the annual UBC-Mizuno Tournament, our Angels took the championship with a big win over Belmont.
Sofia Rieger-Torres '21 has been chosen to be one of the speakers at the TED Youth talk to be held on September 28, 2018 at the historical museum inside the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, Steveston, BC. Sofia will speak about her first hand experience in personal interatction with medical professionals, as part of the wider theme, "The discovery of the unknown beauty."
A second win in two days for our Senior A Field Hockey Angels against cross-street rival York House was well earned as both teams are very closely matched. The win was also the Angels second of the day, as they wrapped up the Polar Bears Tournament on Saturday, finishing fifth.
LFA alumna Ann-Marie (Carter) Copping '81 will be running for Park Board in the upcoming Vancouver civic election on October 20. She attended LFA for 5 years from grades 6-10 (grad 1981) and when her daughter, Lauren Copping '12 started at LFA, Ann-Marie became involved in the Parents' Auxiliary Committee and was active with the Alumnae Executive.
This year's Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) will feature the world premier of Finding Big Country: a film by our own Kat Jayme '06. The Achieve Anything Foundation teamed up with the Royal Canadian Navy to give young women a chance to explore opportunities in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine & Defense, and other STEM-based fields to reduce gender disparity. Our own Athena Pucovsky '19 applied and was chosen to take part in the opportunity to spend a day on the HMCS Regina.
Anna Mazurenko ‘19 was accepted into the Stanford Pre-Collegiate program for Chemical Physics. This highly-intensive program is taught by Stanford students and professors and includes visits to the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to see first-hand how scientists study chemistry in modern labs. Congratulations, Anna! We look forward to hearing about your experience.
LFA student Asha Mior '20 has been recognized by the Kimberley Foundation’s FOCUS! Climate Change Video Contest. Asha's film, Bee Crisis, was shortlisted in the competition and has been recognized as worthy of special commendation. Bee Crisis stood out among the 160 films submitted by more than 400 students from 8 provinces and over 85 institutions.
The Harvard Model UN Congress (HMCE) in Madrid in March, 2018 proved to be a superbly wonderful experience for all delegates. Known for its professionalism and organization, this conference also boasts an encouraging and co-operative approach to negotiations that make liaising with others very meaningful. Harvard's conference in Europe is rich because there are many students from many countries around the world and they bring their experiences to the issues being discussed. Not only did this Harvard delegation enjoy this conference par excellence, these MUN students were able to enjoy some traveling to lovely parts of the South of Spain where they viewed beautiful architectural and historic sites cities as the UNESCO heritage city of Toledo, the Alhambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Cordoba.

Clare has demonstrated extraordinary community service, both through her successful career in policing and through her personal and deeply committed humanitarian outreach work. Emily reached the highest international levels in her sport, captaining the Canadian volleyball team, before bridging her athletic success into a successful broadcast journalism career.

This year, students in Programming 12 are using Unity 3D game engine and the C# programming language to build a mobile application to complete in this year's Technovation Challenge. They are also creating a business plan that includes various models earning income around their mobile application idea. In April, everything comes together for a Dragon's Den-style venture pitch in front of a panel of judges at a regional competition.

Twenty six students recently attended PacificMUN in Vancouver on 23rd- 25th February, 2018. It was LFA’s first time in attendance at this relatively new Vancouver Model UN conference and the overall experience was praised by all. Additionally, we also won 6 awards!

Jeanna Pillainayagam ‘19 and Asha Mior ‘20 recently returned from competing at the 2018 National Public Speaking Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Nationals featured the very best public speakers from across the country, with a number of competitors who had even competed and won at the Worlds level in previous years.
At the start of the season, conventional wisdom would have thought it would be a transition year, having only one returning player from last year. It would have also been understandable to also keep expectations low given two key players were unavailable for the season (rehabbing from injuries) and LFA running with a team of only 8 players (three of whom are grade 10’s)... but someone forgot to tell this team. The Angels through a collective team effort advanced to the provincials in a hard fought 80-59 win against a scrappy Pitt Meadows.

For many of our alumnae, they’ve watched our alumnae newsletter evolve from a few stories on a glossy sheet of paper into its current form—a stunning magazine, full of alumnae and school stories, alongside beautiful photography. While the format is strikingly different, the constant is the grass-roots input of storytelling and submissions of photos and ideas by our alumnae community. In that regard, it is over 80 pages of compelling reading for the more than 3000 alumnae, parents, and incoming families who receive the publication.

The famous relic of St. Francis Xavier is coming to North America for the first time in generations. Organized by Catholic Christian Outreach, The Archdiocese of Ottawa, and the Jesuits in Canada, the relic is travelling across Canada to celebrate Canada 150 and will be on display in the Lower Mainland for two days. The public veneration at St. Francis Xavier Church in Vancouver on Wednesday, January 24th includes a 7pm Mass with Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB.

When the Vancouver Police Department welcomed its newest recruits last week, there was a decidedly Little Flower Academy feel to the occasion. Six of the fifteen new police recruits were women, and two of those were recent LFA graduates. Congratulations to MK Battle '09 and Alex Bland '10! We know both to have impeccable judgment and integrity and will serve the community faithfully.
