On January 23rd, 33 delegates from LFA headed to Hyatt Regency Hotel for the Vancouver Model United Nations (VMUN) 2026.
From the fast-paced debate taking place in twenty committees with 1500 delegates, to the wonderful delegate social, this conference remains one of the most prestigious conferences in Vancouver. A profound amount of delegates, especially our students, gained a deeper understanding of international issues, as well as growth in public speaking and leadership skills. Thus, it is highly recommended for all LFA students to join the MUN, as it is a unique opportunity to meet new friends, make unforgettable memories, and engage in meaningful debate.
Awards
LFA did spectacularly at VMUN 2026, winning a total of 8 awards across 20 unique committees. Each girl spoke exceptionally and participated in debate with passion. LFA won two Best Delegates– awarded to Sherlynn Fung '26 as China on the International Labour Organization and Krupa Pramod '28 as France on the United Nations Human Rights Council. Moreover, Juri Matsuda '27 as India on United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Sarah Nguyen '27 as South Africa on the World Meteorological Organization were awarded Outstanding Delegate. Juliet Mabasa '27 was awarded Honorable Mention, as Australia on United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Lastly, the three Best Researched awards went to Sydney Spratt '28 as New Zealand on the Disarmament and International Security Committee, Therese Robles '27 as France on the International Labour Organization, and Ava Nasrabadi '26 as Richard Helms on the Fictional Crisis Committee.
VMUN involved a variety of committees that discussed a range of issues– from the Space Race to Nuclear Infrastructure in Conflict Zones. Delegates spoke in a combination of structured moderated caucuses about specific topics and also liaised with others in their committee during unmoderated caucuses. Through cooperation and intensive research, the LFA delegates were able to collaborate to pass resolution papers that addressed many of the pressing issues that are in our world. LFA also had fun at VMUN’s delegate social, which involved engaging games and a thrilling dance room! Here, delegates were able to meet students from other schools and make some amazing friends. The debate and activities at VMUN were enjoyable for LFA in many aspects.
Our Experience
What is the biggest tip that you have for new delegates?
Krupa Pramod '28, Best Delegate in UNHRC
Being a new delegate can be nerve-wracking, as MUN involves a variety of skills including public speaking and problem solving. I certainly experienced this firsthand at my first conference, VYMUN. I believe the best way to overcome this fear is to be well prepared in terms of research. By knowing your topic in detail and using resources such as your background guide and online information, one can gain confidence in what they are speaking about. Ultimately, this will reflect in your delivery and speeches as well. Before going into any conference, ensure your research is multi-faceted and accurate, and this will certainly make new delegates shine in any committee.
What makes VMUN unique from other Model UN conferences?
Juri Matsuda '27, Outstanding Delegate in UNPFII
For me, what sets VMUN apart from other conferences is its emphasis on fast-paced, professional committees and immersive topics. At this conference, I was part of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), where the topics focused on cultural safety in healthcare and sustainable development in tourism. Having attended the conference twice so far, I have seen that VMUN’s comprehensive range of committees and topics is designed to serve a wide variety of interests. A highlight of this conference is the social, where I was able to take part in games and dance with my friends on the dance floor. This event stood out for me because it allowed me to socialize not only with members of my committee but also with delegates from other committees. Overall, this conference is one of my favourite conferences to date, and I look forward to participating in future iterations.
What skills or experience did you gain from VMUN?
Sarah Nguyen '27, Outstanding Delegate in WMO
Before participating in the LFA MUN club, I was a reserved student who hesitated to speak in front of others. Through MUN, especially VMUN in particular, I was able to develop self confidence, gain leadership skills I didn’t know I had, and learn how to speak with conviction. The VMUN dais team is super encouraging and provided feedback that enabled me to improve my debate skills over those three days. However, MUN overall helped me understand the power of persuasion in public speaking and meaningful debate. I encourage all LFA students to join Model UN for the experience, community, and all the countless memories it makes.
