There are several exciting events for the Model UN Club this Spring. Firstly, the superbly organized HMCE (Harvard Model UN Congress Europe) will be attended by 23 studious LFA delegates who are presently preparing for their involvement on 6 committees including the EU (European Union, WHO (World Health Organization) and the G15 (Group of 15) among others.
This year, the conference will be held in the beautiful city of Rome and the group will tour cities and sites in Switzerland and Italy as well as compete in this world class conference where they will negotiate with other delegates from many countries around the globe. This rare interaction is one of the most rewarding and stimulating features of this conference. Historically, we have done very well at Harvard conferences winning multiple awards at each convention attended in the last 5 years. Good luck to the students who will leave to attend HMCE, Rome on Thursday March 3rd. You are undoubtedly, the best among the best at this conference!
Another new venture for the Model UN Club this year will be the first LFAMUN - a one day Model UN conference held for LFA and VC students at LFA on Saturday April 2nd. This conference was the baby of Sandy Pang, who will act as the Secretary General for the conference and she will be ably assisted by all of the other LFA Model UN leaders (all 21 of them) who are available and willing to act as Chairs and other dais members on 6 committees. Next week, the LFAMUN website will be available for all to see (thanks to Eurielle Marmol andSandy) and posters (courtesy of Noa Wang) advertising our awards including gavels (3 per committee including prestigious awards like the Lester B. Pearson Award for Peacekeeping) will decorate the hallowed walls of LFA. Already 60 LFA members have registered for the conference and next week we will take registration forms and posters to our "Meet and Greet" at VC. Their Model UN sponsor teacher is happy for this event and it will probably prove to be a fiercely competitive conference but one that will also be a lot of fun as all things are with the Fighting Irish!
Last but not least, Elizabeth Vaz of grade 11, was the student who won the LFA Model UN speak off this past Tuesday which enables her to compete as the LFA candidate at the annual Oddfellows UN Pilgrimage competition. Here, Elizabeth will speak about her thoughts and ideas on issues for the UN that she deems important. If Elizabeth wins this competition, she will attend the annual two week UN Pilgrimage to Boston, New York and Washington, DC in July, 2016 with approximately 300 other students from around the world who have won their regions' speak off. There is also another chance for Elizabeth to speak at the General Assembly in New York if chosen. Monica Ng, alumni of 2012 now studying at the University of Pennsylvania won this trip sponsored by the Oddfellows at the end of her grade 11 year. She wrote of her unforgettable experience for the school's newsletter upon her return. Last year, Hannah Goodridge was the "runner Up" in this competition. So, we wish Elizabeth Vaz who will no doubt represent LFA very well, all the very best for her speech on the evening of 18th February.
With so much talent and enthusiasm in the LFA Model UN Club, it is hard for me not to write several more paragraphs singing the praises of all of the 'LFA Model UN Angels". Mr. Coady, the Model UN teacher chaerone, concurs with these sentiments as well. This year's Grade 10 group have already had outstanding success at 2 conferences and I look forward to the new training sessions for Grade 9's who will have their first introductory information meeting on Tuesday March 2nd.
