Junior Basketball Update

Our Junior basketball Angels round into mid-season form with two big wins over quality teams from Richmond and Vancouver.
The Angels started the Christmas break with an exhibition game against Richmond’s undefeated McMath High school. The Angels dominated early but could not sink their baskets consistently enough to really pull away, taking only a slight 20-16 lead at the half. In the second half, the Angels again could not capitalize on the attacking opportunities, but played so well defensively that they took the win 42-32.

Coming off the Christmas break, the Angels played an exhibition game against Vancouver’s Lord Byng—another undefeated team. The Angels worked on a new offensive scheme, which immediately paid big dividends. The girls were rewarded with a huge first half, raking up 38 points. There were a few kinks to be ironed out as they also gave up 24 points to Byng. The second half was a different story. Stout defensive work by Ashley Velasco ’19, Sharon Luk ’19 and Alannah Turnbull ’20 kept the Lord Byng team in check while the Angels continued to pile points on offensively. Kayla Canama ’19, Ceili McCabe ’19 and Alexis Fong ’19 combined for a remarkable 60 points on route to a huge 78-36 win. Congratulations to Hannah Ro ’19 on scoring a memorable first basket as an Angel. Coach Ramirez had the opportunity to play all trying out different line combinations.

With wins against first place teams from other leagues, coupled with a solid regular season record, Little Flower moved from being unranked to fourth in the lower mainland. They can continue their ascent as they play Tuesday in a league game against STM and host their own tournament Jan 13-14. Come cheer them on!
