Well, it is that wonderful time of year again when the Model UN Club is getting into "high gear"quite rapidly. The LFA Model UN Club will attend three conferences this fall involving approximately 100 students!
VYMUN (WPGA Model UN conference for new students) will take place in Whistler at the Westin Hotel from October 30th - November 1st. LFA will send 50 delegates to compete with St. Georges, Crofton House, York House and WPGA of course, as well as some schools from Vancouver Island. This conference is an excellent conference and the new Model UN delegates have been superbly trained to understand the rules of parliamentary style debate thanks to the strong Model UN leadership team of 22 students with head leader being the talented Sandy Pang who is not only a superb participator but an outstanding teacher to these new students. Topics will arrive late September and then the excitement and momentum towards the conference will be palpable!
The second conference of the year will be SSUNS (McGills' Model UN conference in Montreal) which will take place in mid November. This conference is always extremely well organized, stimulating and professional. Some of the most competitive teams in North America attend this conference. Topics for this conference are due to be released very soon. A special feature of this conference is the fact that we get to meet up with LFA Alumni attending McGill, some of whom will provide us with a tour of McGill. This year, Elizabeth Murphy, (grad of 2014) will take the lead and organize a tour of McGill for the LFA team competing at SSUNS. She will also get all of the "Angels Alumni" together for a "coffee catchup" in their Student Union building. According to Elizabeth, there are currently 12 LFA alumni attending McGill, so meeting up will be great especially for Mr. Coady and myself. Elizabeth herself, was a very involved and award winning Model UN student at LFA who attended many conferences including SSUNS and Harvard in Spain.
The third conference of the term is CONNECT MUN held at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver from 20- 22nd November. Approximately 40 enthusiastic girls have now signed up and been given their country and committee assignments and our group meetings will start next week. This conference will have participants from many public and private schools in Vancouver. So, away we go!
I would like to thank all MUN members at LFA and all of the talented leaders who are imparting great wisdom to the new MUN members. This will no doubt be a very exciting year for LFA looking at the high calibre of students who have signed up for conferences this fall. I am looking forward to another great year with all of the Model UN Angels!
