Volleyball Gold and Silver

LFA's volleyball program delivered in spades this past weekend. Our Bantam Angels captured the league title for the third year in a row while the Junior Volleyball Team finished second in the league playoffs.
The Bantam Angels started their bid for the league championship with a shaky start against rival St. Pat's. Playing in front of a good crowd at LFA, nerves seemed to get the better of them for the first half hour. While hey dug themselves a 7-15 hole, their calm and assertive approach never waivered. Soon after a time-out, you could sense the tide turning. The Angels poured on the pressure and salvaged the first set. The second set was close, but always in the Angels favour. They closed out the second set, winning their league Championship game 2-0.

Having watched the Bantam team win their league championship, the Junior team took the court in their own Championship Final. The Angels knew that undefeated St. Thomas More, who apparently only dropped one set all season, would be a formidable opponent. Coach Adrian got every player into the game, giving a real sense that the both the effort and the outcome were a team effort. The energy in the gym was electric as the Angels matched point after point. Then, however, STM's "twins" took over, attacking the Angels defense. Every Angel played well, exciting the crowd with a display of aerial spikes, net play and "ace" serves, but lost, in the end, to the stronger team. Alexis Fong '19 was selected as LFA's "Finals Player of the Match".

The Junior's season has been a great success, both on the court and off, as new friendships were forged between the Grades 9 and 10's which the girls will take with them beyond just the volleyball season. The Juniorr Angels, finalists for the second year in a row, have also qualified for the Provincial Championship tournament starting November 27th. Go Angels!
