Our exciting Model UN year has commenced! Fresh from her two week prize trip and UN Pilgrimage with the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Elizabeth Vaz is newly inspired by global issues and her North American experiences.
Elizabeth, a Model UN leader who represented the LFA Model UN Club, won the UN Speech “speak off” in Vancouver last February, has much to report on her trip. Please read the accompanying account of her exciting pilgrimage with 100 other students from North America and Europe.
We have a great line up of conferences for this year and for the Fall, we start with VYMUN sponsored by WPGA in late October. 60 intelligent grade 10 students will board the bus for the Westin in Whistler on Friday 28th October to participate in their first ever Model UN conference. Superbly run and organized, this conference boasts many interesting committees and a Halloween dance on the Saturday night where costumes are a must! We are expecting committee assignments and topics within the next week or so and we will be able to start researching our countries and committee issues to compete with WPGA (of course), St. Georges School, Crofton House, York House, Vancouver College and other private schools on Vancouver Island that attend each year. This conference is always a fantastic experience.
In November, we will attend two conferences. The first is Stanford University’s Model UN conference for high school students (SMUNC). This year, there will be 30 stellar senior students (from grades 11 and 12 only) attending this conference on the beautiful Stanford campus in Palo Alto. Committee and country assignments are due to arrive within days and then the preparation for this very competitive conference will begin!
Late November brings the local CONNECT MUN conference held at the Hyatt Hotel in November. There are approximately 600 students at this conference and it is attended by many different schools throughout the wider Vancouver region. As always, local conferences help to prepare students for those “away” conferences like Harvard international conferences, SSUNS at Mc Gill and many other superb conferences where students debate global issues with students from many different countries providing very diverse and interesting perspectives.
Our winter and spring will bring some excellent conferences including the UNYOUTH Model UN conference in Sydney, Australia!
I would like to thank the Model UN leaders in advance for their help and support throughout the upcoming year. They will start with mentoring the 60 students attending VYMUN in October. They will edit position papers and be available to answer questions on research that new students may have. They will then proceed to provide leadership at events like the School Club Activities Fair and the Open House in October explaining the club for all potential students and their parents highlighting the conferences LFA usually attends.
Stay tuned for more Model UN updates. I am sure this year will be memorable, stimulating and fun! Mrs. Julie Mills (Model UN Club Moderator).
