VYMUN success for the newest Model UN-ers

JULIE MILLS
The last weekend in October saw 60 grade 10 Model UN students attend VYMUN (or WPGA Model UN) in Whistler. This conference comprises 300 students from many schools in BC and it is now a conference for beginner and experienced Model UN students. Special congratulations goes to the 11 students who won awards at this conference. This was a great achievement given all LFA students were first time Model UNers.
The “Best” Delegate Award denotes 1st place; the “Outstanding” Delegate Award denotes 2nd place; “Honorable mention” denotes 3rd place and the “Best Position Paper Award denotes the best position paper of the committee. The following girls were acknowledged for their success:
  • Morgan Nunez won the Best Delegate representing South Africa  on her committee (DISEC)
  • Vanessa Batten won Best Delegate on her committee (JCC- Joint Crisis Committee)
  • Caroline Wang won Outstanding on the JCC
  • Desiree Wu won Outstanding Delegate representing China on UNODC (Committee on Drugs and Crime)
  • Nicola Bonard won Outstanding Delegate representing the Ukraine on WHO (World Health Organization)
  • Melissa Lam also won Outstanding Delegate representing the Ukraine (double delegation) on WHO
  • Gabriella Guerra won Best Position Paper as Egypt on the UNSC (Security Council)
  • Anya Naval won Best Position Paper as Germany on the UNHRC (Human Rights Council)
  • Monica Kim won Best Position Paper as Argentina on UNEP (Environment Programme)
  • Linda Chen and Danica Vaangsgaard won Best Position Paper as Australia on UNESCO (double delegation)
All 60 students did extremely well at this conference with many delegates speaking well individually and in unmoderated caucus (or groups) where they made allies. It was particularly pleasing to see so many awards for Best Position papers as one of the benefits gained from being in the Model UN Club is an improved level of writing. It was also wonderful to witness the confidence that many students already exude despite it being a first time conference experience. There is a lot of potential to be tapped with this group.

The students also enjoyed many aspects of the conference especially socializing with new people. One of the highlights of the conference is the exciting Halloween Dance on Saturday night. Both the wonderfully creative costumes and the music made this a fun filled event and LFA costumes were very imaginative.
Thank you to all students for your wonderful participation at VYMUN 2016! You represented LFA very well and I look forward to many future conferences with this group.
