Twenty five LFA students attended the CONNECT MUN Model UN conference held at the Hyatt Hotel, Vancouver on the weekend of the 18-20th November. This group were very strong in their participation and they represented LFA very well.
Four students won impressive awards. They are:
Elizabeth Vaz '17 who represented the USA won "The Best" candidate award on her Bioethics Committee
Naomi Shi '18 as the Minister of Internal Afairs for Iran on an historical committee about Iran won "The Best" candidate award
Elise Lafleur '18 representing Belgium on the EU won "The Outstanding" candidate award, and
Phoebe Cheung '18 as Japan on UNESCAP (a special commision on Asia) won Honorable Mention on her committee.
All of these girls excelled as not only were they great advocates for policy and resolutions, they were very skilled at bringing people together. They exhibited diplomatic finesse, a quality that sometimes eludes many other well intentioned delegates and a quality needed for effective drafting of resolutions.
A very interesting part of this conference was the lively and engaging keynote speech by Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada. Her personal stories and well appointed and informative facts about the environment and making a difference by being involved in our world made for a very inspirational and thought -provoking speech.
Thank you to all who attended this conference. The great level of engagement on all committees develops confidence and of course, the critical thinking skills for all delegates. Each conference builds skills for the next conference and knowledge that cannot help but broaden one's perspectives.
