The Junior Basketball Angels beat last year's top rival to book their place in their tournament championship game.
As the Angels waited for their semi-final game against the Argyle Pipers, they watched the two other teams contending for the final battle it out. The physicality and emotions were getting the better of some players and illustrated what was at stake at this tournament, with both the tournament gold and a bye at the Provincial Championships on the line.
Last year the Angels lost both games to the eventual Provincial Championship Argyle team. Argyle and LFA were both different teams and the Angels were ready. From the opening tip-off, the Angels went on a 9-0 run and led 26-11 at half time. In the second half, the Angels dictated the play. Their pressure defence stifled Argyle's attack and, as ever, the Angels' counter-attack was deadly. Long break-out passes or the willingness (and effectiveness) to launch 3’s like shooting stars, they opened up Argyle’s defence. As the defenders floundered, lanes got bigger for players to penetrate to score off the dribble. The Angels closed out the game with a 63-29 victory.
They will play Heritage Woods for an automatic top 8 seed berth in Junior Provincials.
