Six LFA Model UN students were winners at PACMUN Hawaii in November! LFA sent 26 students to the Hawaiian Model UN, where they had the privilege of being the first LFA Model UN students to take part in PACMUN in Honolulu this past November. The conference is now in its fourth year and all those who attended are “singing its praises”.
PACMUN is a very well organized MUN conference instigated by the Stevens Foundation of Hawaii which aims to both encourage and sponsor local Hawaiian students to participate while also encouraging a wider international presence. The conference opened with a conference dinner where students sat and socialised with delegates from other schools while listening to a very inspirational talk from Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa who represents Hawaii on the US House of Representatives. Her perspectives on Pacific issues were very enlightening. The conference had many “crisis" committees allowing for a lot of spontaneous debate while creating realistic world scenarios.
All LFA students participated with great vigour and interest at the conference revealing increased confidence and skill. Six students won awards at this conference on their respective committees. They are:
Cindy Gao '19 who won Outstanding as the Whitehouse Chief of Staff on the United States National Security Council
Aine Nunez '20 who won Best Position Paper on the National Security of China
Jacqueline Wong '20 who won Honorable Mention on the National Security Council of Japan
Trisha- Mae Capistrano '20 who won Honorable Mention on the National Security Council of India
Elizabeth Tam '20 who won Honorable Mention on the National Security Council of Pakistan
Renee Laberge '19 who won Honorable Mention as she represented Canada on the Asian Development Bank
Apart from the outstanding conference experience, the students were able to experience the very interesting Polynesian Cultural Centre and Pearl Harbor which were both very educational. In addition, the girls managed remarkably well as they hiked Diamond Head providing lovely views of Waikiki. Mr. Coady and I would like to sincerely thank the very special group that attended this conference. Your co- operation and positive attitudes made this conference trip most memorable.
