Angels Fall in Semi Finals

Parent contributor
In the Bulldog Classic semi-final game LFA would have to play Carson Graham Eagles to advance to finals against York House.
LFA started strong but expended valuable energy building a 31-14 lead at half time. In the second half Carson Graham’s strategy of playing their second unit most of the first half, then play their starters in the second half paid off. LFA's eight players to Carson Graham’s twelve combined with a significant height advantage, the Angels started to tire from the physical interior play and fighting for rebounds on both ends of the court.

At a critical point in the game, the Eagles scored six points in less than a minute using their press and trap on in-bounds. They held on to close out the game 68-62. Overall Ashley Velasco ’19 had a stellar game: intercepting passes and showing her vertical skills, competing against a player that were five to eight inches taller. Ava Macfarlane ’20 showed her tenacity, not backing down from the battles to secure loose balls against her bigger opponent. Maya Landero-Van ’20 had a break out game, scoring from inside and outside the key, showing that she is not afraid to take on any opponent while driving in to the hoop. Ceili McCabe ’19 and Raichel Feenan ’18 chipped in, as ever, with their points and the team got contributions from an energetic Isabel Jalandoon ’19, Sharon Luk’19 and Allison Kuzyk ’20. With each tournament the young Angels are gaining experience playing at a pace where time and space quickly disappear and having to handle playing and in physical nature of varsity basketball.

Alexis Fong’19 will advance to the final two in the three point shooting contest against her friend from Churchill.  The Angels will also play host Churchill for bronze Friday, Jan 12 at noon.
