Angels Qualify for Provincials

Parent contributor
At the start of the season, conventional wisdom would have thought it would be a transition year, having only one returning player from last year. It would have also been understandable to also keep expectations low given two key players were unavailable for the season (rehabbing from injuries) and LFA running with a team of only 8 players (three of whom are grade 10’s)... but someone forgot to tell this team. The Angels through a collective team effort advanced to the provincials in a hard fought 80-59 win against a scrappy Pitt Meadows.
With the gravity of the game, our Angels started out a little tentative, missing on early shots, which allowed Pitt Meadows to set up their half-court game. Compounding the early anxiety, Ashley Velasco ’19 was injured early-on, getting a cut to her forehead that somehow didn't warrant a foul call. To her great credit, she later returned (all patched up) and played, arguably, her best game of the season. She elevated her exceptional defence and vertical leap-blocking shots, and was force: she led the team in scoring.

Raichel Feenan ’18 had a strong game, scoring inside the paint using an assortment of moves in the post and made it difficult for Pitt Meadows to shoot on the defensive end. When the Angels started to dictate the pace in the second half, Ceili McCabe ’19 and Maya Landero-Van ’20 used their quickness, cutting in or outrunning their checks to score off fast break plays. Ava MacFarlane ’20, Allison Kuzyk ‘20 and Sharon Luk ’19 put on their work boots and battled for rebounds against the physical Pitt Meadows team. Isabel Jalandoon ’19 and Sara Dee ’20 provided energy off the bench, providing a balanced game for our team. Alexis Fong ’19, unable to play, kept the bench relaxed and cheered on the team with manager Sheliise Duirty Wingson ’19.

Having played six games in eight days in order to qualify, the Angels will have time to recover from their bumps and bruises, before getting ready to play next Wednesday through Saturday at the Langley Event Center. If ever it was the case, it is surely this year that the outcome at Provincials doesn’t matter as much as the journey that got them there. Go Angels!
