Angels Finish Tournament with Another Win

A second win in two days for our Senior A Field Hockey Angels against cross-street rival York House was well earned as both teams are very closely matched. The win was also the Angels second of the day, as they wrapped up the Polar Bears Tournament on Saturday, finishing fifth.
The Polar Bears Tournament is one of the most competitive high school field hockey tournaments available and the girls were really pleased with the early season success. The final game was no exception. Playing without Eleanor Morrison '19, who has been a key player in our central midfield for the past three years might have left a hole; however, every single player adapted wonderfully. The early-season indications are that this team has great depth, which will be so important as they chase down a place at Provincials this year.

Alison Kuzyk '20, who has been playing centre forward for LFA since her grade 8 year, moved back into the midfield with fellow BC Provincial Team player Mikayla Stelling '21. They really owned the middle and created all sorts of attack. Ava McFarlane '20 played her second game in a row at centre-forward. She made a case for getting more time in the prime scoring position with another goal--the game winner and her fifth of the day. We run a constant rotation of wingers because of the volume of running and they really did an excellent job.

Defensively, the team was vintage LFA. Everyone was back and contributing. This commitment to defense was probably the difference in the game. There was a steep learning curve for our new wingers, who had some exhausting runs as they had responsibilities deep in their own zone and high on the attack. They collectively did a fantastic job. The back line looks to be particularly strong this year too. Returning defenders Mimi Wallace '20 and Francesca Yep '20 bring such confidence to the back line. Gracie Korac '20 also stepped into the backfield and did excellent work in a new role. Meanwhile Stephanie Non '20 made the step up from Junior rather seamlessly, meaning there's lots of choices in the back field. Athena Pucaovsky '19 was perfect in net, including several great challenges on YHS short corners.

In a tournament with the top teams from both AA and AAA, the Angels showed they will be in the conversation this year. With hardly any practice under their belts, the girls were fantastic at sticking to their structure. You could see the chemistry and timing improve with each game, despite some incredible pace to the hockey being played. A great a couple of days of field hockey to kick off the season! We now regroup for a week of games, including our regular season opener against Crofton on Wednesday.
