Junior Basketball Start Strong

This year's Junior Angels Basktball team has a younger look than some of the teams past. Of the nine players, seven are 9th graders. However, they move up to the Junior team with the experience of finishing second in last year's Bantam Provincials, which should bode well, despite now facing older players on every team.
The Angels started with an exhibition game against Lord Byng. A good start, though the girls came out on the wrong end of a 42-37 decision. Three team members had only just competed in the volleyball provincials the previous week and were still finding their basketball “legs”, which led to a few missed shots and maybe some stiffness as they got themselves into basketball shape. With sore kids and some foul trouble, a depleted lineup found themselves trailing by 12 with 4 minutes left in the game. They dug in and closed the gap to within five, but ran out of time to complete the comeback.

In the league season opener, The Angels showed their capability, running rampant over Crofton House. The Angels fast break offense took a 10 to 0 lead after two minutes and never looked back. Coach Bob and Chris took the opportunity to balance everyone's playing time and work on executing different plays. The Angels followed up the next night with an impressive 61-34 exhibition game win against McMath. The last week before Christmas break, the Angels made it three-in-a-row when they defeated their cross street rivals York house 50-33.

The team played their first tournament of the season at Christmas break, traveling out to Langley to play Yale, Walnut Grove and Seycove.

The Angels lost to Yale by six points, though several players were clearly playing while feeling sick and a couple of girls got injuries during game. Nerves might have also played a role in a couple of missed shots too. Despite being down to a skeleton line-up of six to seven players for the next two games, the team will be proud of their accomplishments. They held up well with the pace of the games, even though they were out-sized and clearly adjusting the noticeable physicality of the opponents. Smaller, knocked over, elbowed in the paint, the girls were not intimated and pushed back. The girls stood their ground, resulting in numerous charging fouls. The Angels got up smiling, drawing cheers from teammates and supporters. It was a great test of a higher level of ball that's seldom seen week to week in league games that lack the urgency and intensity of a top level tournament.

It's worth noting that the girls found themselves against Walnut Grove, in a rematch of last season’s Bantam Provincials finals. LFA played relentless defense, frustrating their top scorers and we were only down 8 at half time, the same point differential as last season. With about four minutes to go down only by 10, LFA tried to go on a run of their own, but worn down from playing the whole game with only one healthy sub proved too much as the girls couldn't sustain the pace with Walnut Grove’s fresher players. The score sheet from the three games didn’t favor LFA, but the girls learned valuable lessons, confidence, comradery and are emerging as a really competitive team who can clearly play with the very best in the province.

Well done Angels! We're looking forward to following you into the new year!
