This year's Junior Basketball team capped off an extraordinary year with a big win over St Thomas More to clinch their first Junior Lower Mainland Championship in several years.
After finishing the regular season undefeated, and widely outscoring their opponents, it was like déjà vu for many of the players who played in last year’s Bantam semi-finals. They would first have to overcome Notre Dame to give them a rematch against St Thomas More.
The Angels, after a week of inactivity, were a little sluggish out of the gates. If they maybe did not execute their plays as well as they could, they showed their trademark resiliency by working hard until they regained their form. A strong second half put the game away, defeating Notre Dame by (coincidently) the same margin of points as the Bantams did last year.
As hosts in the highly anticipated final, Angels were down to eigth players. Two were playing with the flu like symptoms. It contributued to an air of nervous excitement from players and coaches. The excitement for the game also reached the stands, where supporters from both schools even some parents and players from earlier bronze medal place game remained to watch. It was an electric atmosphere.
There was lots on the line. Not just the fourth seed placing in Lower Mainland’s and a clearer route to Provincials, but by winning, STM would be Junior League champions for an incredible sixth time in as many years. For LFA, the Championship would be the first since 2000: most of the team would not have been born yet!
STM scored off the opening tipoff, LFA quickly answered back by scoring on their first possession. With all the nervous energy exhibited by both teams the scoring was back and forth off costly turnovers. Finally, LFA changed the balance by switching to a full court press. Take-awys leading to points were frustrating STM, LFA couldn’t quite pull away as STM fought back hard and was only down by 10 at the half. The game was filled with nice 3 point shots from both sides and, remarkably, both teams kept up the thrilling, fast pace game while avoiding foul trouble.
Angel's fans could only exhale from all the tension when, with but two minutes left, they took a 14 point lead. It was a “sweet” win not only for the school and Coach C. (the first championship with a team is always a memorable one) but for the wider team. It was truly a total team effort with major contributions from the whole bench. Every player took regular shifts, making timely shots and defensive stops.
A big thank you for the manager(s) the unsung heroes of the team who retrieve loose balls during warm ups, keep stats and tirelessly fill water bottles during the games, the time/score keeping crew for their service. Coach B & C did a great job guiding the team to winning the league championship.
Congratulations are due to both teams for putting on an entertaining final.
The next challenge for the Angels is at Lower Mainland tournament to qualify for provincials. This starts Thursday at STM against Churchill Secondary. Go Angels!
