Congratulations to the six members of LFA’s public speaking team who represented the school so wonderfully this past weekend at the Provincials held at St. John’s School.
Katarina Szulc '19, Jeanna Pillainayagam '19, Rosemary Vayalikunnel '19, Maia Lan '20, Alannah Turnbull '20 and Asha Mior '20 did exceptionally well placed high. It was a weekend of intense completion: multiple rounds in various categories of debate, interpretive reading, dramatic monologue, as well as persuasive and impromptu speeches.
At the senior level, Katarina won gold medals in both interpretive and impromptu speech and was awarded a trophy for third among senior speakers in the province. Jeanna was awarded a bronze medal for her "persuasive", as well as the award for coming sixth among senior students in the province. Both Katarina and Jeanna had excelled in Provincials and Nationals last year as well. They were also competing last month, along with Grace Walker '17, in the Internationals and both proceeding all the way to the finals.
In the junior category, Asha swept the awards, winning gold for both "interpretive" and "impromptu" and silver for "debate" and "persuasive speech" to become the number one junior speaker in the province. Alannah made it to several finals, including "debate" and "dramatic monologue", winning gold for her very moving monologue which helped her achieve 4th overall junior speaker in the province.
This tournament was a qualifying one for junior nationals and both Asha and Alannah will proceed to this completion, which will be held in May, 2017. Many thanks to all our outstanding LFA orators for contributing so much of their time and talent.
Thanks also to Tiffany Chen who volunteered as a moderator throughout the event as well as our parent volunteers Jude Pillainayagam, Karine Boily and Kalpna Solanki.
Teacher sponsors are Mary Duffy and Vy Tran, though we are blessed to have alumna Sandy Pang '16 back with us regularly to run workshops.
