Nine LFA students take the lead at VYMUN, Whistler, 2017

Julie Mills
Wonderful sunny weather with snow-capped peaks provided the picturesque backdrop for the VYMUN conference held in Whistler from the 27-29th October this year. 53 capable grade 10 students attended this year’s conference of approximately 500 delegates sponsored by WPGA and LFA won 9 awards.

This is a very competitive conference with many schools (public and private in attendance) including Crofton House, York House, Collingwood, Mulgrave,  St. Georges, St. Michael’s University School and Shawinigan Lake. All students contributed fully at the conference.

4 students won the “Best” on their committee for their stellar performances. They are:

Asha Mior '20 who represented USA on ASEAN
Asha demonstrated great knowledge of her topic (as needed to be the USA), poise and confidence and she managed to get lots of allies even though they initially opposed her solutions. One of the topics debated was USA’s threatened withdrawal from the Pans Pacific Partnership. Asha was a clear and diplomatic leader in the debate on this committee in every session.

Madeline Miller '20 who represented Japan on the G20
Madeline exuded great confidence and superior understanding of the complicated topics of
“Reforming Global Trade” and “The Rise of Digital Technology”. She was involved in debate at every moment and her thorough research was obvious, making her the clear winner on this committee.

Alison Lee '20 who represented Iraq on the Arab League
Alison was calm amidst the fire as the committee debated “Combating the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria”. Her ability to respond to tough questions and her diplomacy won her this award.

Taylor Van Marrewyk '20 who represented the Netherlands on the European Union (EU)
Taylor demonstrated some very effective solutions when examining the issues surrounding “Brexit” on the EU. Taylor was persistent in putting forth her ideas clearly throughout all committee sessions and she demonstrated a great ability to liaise with others diplomatically.

2 students won “Outstanding” in their committee. They are
Samantha Zaste '20 and Chiarra Mezzarobba '20 who represented France on SOCHUM
This committee was a double delegation committee and both students showed many valuable insights and confidence in contributing many clever ideas about “Slum Tourism” and “The Protection  of Women and Child Refugees Fleeing War Zones”.

3 students won “Best Position Papers” on their respective committees and they are Sofia Perelonia '20, Sara Ueda '20  and Chloe Law '20. These girls demonstrated excellent research and writing skills in their papers allowing them to be very well prepared for their committees.

Congratulations to all prize winners and all 53 students for representing LFA so well!
