Sports Athletes of the Year

At LFA, there are so many stories to tell about the amazing accomplishments of our student athletes. With such an extraordinary athletic program at LFA, we'd like to share 12 different stories. Each is the story, highlighting the athlete of the year for each of our sports programs at the school. All these stories have some common threads. Dedication to LFA Athletics. Excellence in Character. Great leaders, And, of course, the athletic excellence, which has meant that they have been selected as the LFA MVP for their sport. Please read about each of these outstanding performers.
Track MVP
Ceili McCabe '19 is a bit like the Energizer Bunny--she just keeps going and going. Ceili has been the heart of this year’s team. In addition to excelling in her individual events, and concurrently being an asset to the soccer team, she recruited other senior athletes to be part of two winning relay teams. Ceili has determination second to none when there is an athlete ahead of her in a race. This really comes out during relays and watching her make up ground is a real inspiration to others.

Field MVP
Athena Pucovsky '19 has been a dedicated thrower for five years. She has a positive attitude and makes genuine efforts to improve her skills in shot put and discus. She gets up for those early morning practices on the field in all kinds of weather and is a wonderful mentor to the younger students.

Soccer MVP
A joint award goes to Kathleen Aitchison '19 and Eleanor Morrison '19. Both Kathleen and Eleanor have been impact players for the senior soccer team starting in their grade 8 year. Together, the two have been dominant forces in the central midfield, showing grit in winning balls and finesse and poise when the ball is at their feet. More importantly, these two have shown tremendous leadership on and off the field. They will be sorely missed next year.

Tennis MVP
Tiana Xie '19 is the perfect tennis team player as she possesses all the following attributes:
-skill...she has a great all round game which has brought her a high winning % over her 5 years on the team
-commitment...she rarely ever has missed a practice or a match (along with Crystal Nguyen)
-Sportsmanship
-flexibility...she will play wherever the coach plays her
-leadership in helping younger plays and organizing.

Badminton MVP
Janelle Wong '19 has an enthusiasm and passion for Badminton that is unquestionable. Her focus and determination allows her to zone in during each match. She truly is an inspiration and mentor to her younger teammates. The team will miss her next year.

Ultimate MVP
Miyou Shimoshige '19 has been a pillar of consistency for our VC/LFA ultimate team. Her dedication and effort are a testament of her being the team MVP.

Swimming MVP
Desiree Wu '19. “Take your mark”’... “Beep”... and the Angels under the leadership of Desiree began the swim year with people cheering, and whistles blowing. The LFA Swim Team successes (and there were many) are attributed, in no small part, to the devotion, commitment, and talents of Desiree. As Head Coach, Desiree organized and ran all of our practices and registered us for all the Swim Meets. Aside from these responsibilities, Desiree qualified for the Provincials annually, and placed in the Top 3 in relays. The LFA Swim Team will surely miss Desiree next year and thank her very much for her service to the LFA community.

Volleyball MVP
Ashley Velasco '19 has been an impact player from the first day she stepped on the court. She has finished off her career as one of the top outside hitters we have had in our program. She not only has a ton of natural talent, but always has a smile on her face. This year’s accolades include league All Star, UBC tournament All Star, and named as a 1st Team All Star at the Provincials,,, where she led our Angels to a 4th place finish! Thank you for your passion for volleyball and leadership you provided the Volleyball team.

Field Hockey MVP
Eleanor Morrison '19 served her second year as Captain of the Senior A Field Hockey team. More than just showing a remarkable commitment and determination to the field hockey program, "Elmo" is a special hockey talent. She’s relied upon in the centre of the pitch to drive our system and make plays happen, which she does with masterful game sense and the unselfishness of an elite athlete. She is defensively responsible for marking the top players on opposition teams. She also plays key roles in most of our set plays. She does it all, with a wonderful sense of humour and kindness to those around her. We will miss her dearly next year.

Cross Country MVP
Ceili McCabe '19 has an amazing ability to push herself mentally and go beyond what anyone would think is possible. She is so amazing to watch run. This year she made history for LFA by being the first Angel to reach the podium in a race of 600+ racers and finished with the Provincial Silver Medal. Way to go Ceili!

Basketball MVP
Ashley Velasco '19 was the most consistent two-way player on our team. On defense, she notched up the most steals and made some key defensive plays when we needed it the most. Ashley was also our most accurate shooter, and logged in the most minutes out of everyone on the team. She played every game this season making her the “iron-lady” of our team.
