LFA Model UN's spectacular NHSMUN conference trip to New York
On March 9th, 20 LFA MUN students attended the UN sponsored NHSMUN conference in New York City!
It was a most exciting and educational conference trip with many highlights, including the Keynote Speaker, who was the 49th Vice President of the USA, Kamala Harris, as well as visiting many other famous landmarks around the city! These spots included the Top of the Rock lookout, the iconic Central Park, The Met Museum, Grand Central Station, Times Square, and Fifth Avenue, to name a few. One of the most magical or “surreal” experiences was watching the Broadway musical, Wicked, and after, meeting four of the cast members performing in the show! This included Glinda, Elphaba, Madame Morrible, and Fiyero, who not only autographed programs but also spoke to our students and had some photos with them! It was an emotional experience for the girls, both watching the show and meeting the actors! What a time we had!
At the conference, all students developed well and gained much knowledge on their respective committees. Special congratulations go to Jasmine Luk '26 and Sherlynn Fung '26, who won the 2nd place award on the Summit of the Future committee (SOF) as they represented Germany. This was an excellent achievement as there were 42 counties or delegations on this very competitive committee, and Jasmine and Sherlynn were most involved and committed from the very beginning to earn their award. Moreover, Jasmine and Sherlynn were chosen to speak at the final plenary session of the conference with all 1500 delegates present, expressing some of the main issues of their committee. This was a great honor and as Jasmine said (several times), “…it was particularly special as we were able to be on the same stage as Kamala Harris just a few days prior!” She also commented that, “Seeing Kamala Harris from the fourth row was very inspiring- especially her advice to young people in the room to be world leaders.” On the plenary session, Sherlynn said, "I distinctly remember standing on stage, my heart burning as I watched us being projected on the massive screens!” The SOF committee was a most engaging committee as it focused on new digital technologies for the future, especially AI, and the necessity to develop sustainable goals for our global future and security. The topic is very relevant for today, and much knowledge was gleaned by Jasmine and Sherlynn. Additionally, they enhanced the learning of others with their creative, useful and discerning thoughts. Sherlynn said, “Delegating at NHSMUN was a refreshing experience, different from all other conferences I’ve attended- particularly for its scale, professionalism and its dual-delegating mechanism. Additionally, the competitiveness of the conference pushed Jasmine and me to improve and constantly adapt, even strategizing during dinner breaks.” Similarly positive, Jasmine enjoyed, “meeting and making friends with people around the world from different states such as Ohio, Hawaii and Georgia as well as internal visitors from Germany.”
Mrs. Mills would like to sincerely congratulate all students for their efforts at NHSMUN and for their wonderful co-operation throughout the entire trip. It was also wonderful to see Sienna Loo '25 who is now studying at McGill, in her role as the Director of the Historical Crisis Committee and she donned her LFA prefect tie! She had been a very involved LFA MUN delegate, a MUN leader then Secretariat member (Secretary General) in her MUN years at LFA. The NHSMUN conference trip was truly a “united” experience and hence a very happy and enjoyable one. Thank you to Mr. Bengono as chaperone and well done to all Model UN Angels! You are the best!
