This fall we’ve been conducting intensive library skills classes with all the grade eight classes both in the library and the computer lab. In addition, teachers utilize the library’s resources and space to the max. This fall we’ve enjoyed having Miss Roussel’s religion classes visit us for several sessions to plan for the November Mass, Mrs. Clarke’s class visits us regularly for literature circles and Mrs. McGillivray lead her students in creating rose windows. In addition, many other teachers have requested truck loads of resources on topics such as careers, religious orders, Christmas in other lands, Spanish speaking countries etc. With over 15,000 books and many online databases the library is happy to be able to meet their needs.
Not to be outdone by the teachers, students routinely swarm the library before and after school, during recess and lunch to sign out fiction that will earn points in the Accelerated Reading Program. 2009 was the first year an Award of Excellence Trophy was presented to a student who reached over 1,000 points. Both Stephanie Pillainayagam and Monica Ng share this beautiful trophy on display in the library.
The library also hosts various extra-curricular activities. The winter edition of the Globe and Halo newspaper under the direction of senior editor, Jacqueline Woo is hot off the press. The book club organized monthly by Claire Curran is always eagerly anticipated. Two new clubs have started in the library this fall. The Greek Mythology club just had its first meeting, The Library Monitors Volunteer Club has seen over twenty students come each week to the library to work on shelving, shelf-reading, displays, picture and vertical files – providing us with a helping hand while gaining valuable community service hours, work experience and a sense of community spirit. In the spring, the library will add Public Speaking to its long list of clubs. We’d like to thank each and every student for their participation in the library.
