Model UN Club News

Julie Mills
The second semester of the Model UN Club started with a very exciting visit from an alumna who is working at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Emily Ohler ( Class of 1993) heard of the success of our Model UN Club and graced us with a presentation while she had a sojourn in Vancouver to give birth to her first child.
Emily spoke of the work of the United Nations, the path that led her to Geneva and her specific field of work. This presentation was for the entire LFA Model UN Club and I was impressed with the great questions from students. Thank you students and thank you, Emily!

In early March, 30 students attended CAHSMUN (the Canadian High Schools Model UN Conference) held in Richmond. This was the first time we attended this local conference but it is one we will endeavour to attend each year because of the high level of debate and interesting committees. Our students excelled in many areas at this conference- the confidence of many students, the dedication, preparation and application to procedures were to be commended. Much progress was made by all students at this conference. Special congratulations to the following 7 delegates who won awards on their respective committees:

• Aleksandra Rahman- Best Delegate on a committee of over 100 people (representing China)

• Christina Kim- who won 2 awards- the Best Position Paper and the Outstanding Delegate (representing USA)

• Olivia Hui- Best Position Paper( representing Saudi Arabia)

• Loreena Percy -Honorable Mention ( representing China)

• Monica Ng- Honorable Mention ( representing USA)

• Shannon Tan- Honorable Mention ( representing USA)

• Natasha Lam- Verbal Commendation ( representing Saudi Arabia)

The Model UN Club also had 24 delegates at the NHSMUN conference in New York. This was also the first time we attended this conference. This is a very large conference of over 3000 students from all over the world! As a non competitive conference, its aim is to encourage sincere co- operation and negotiation to solve issues of the world and to de-emphasize prizes for individual achievement. Our students did an incredible job just managing the logistics of this conference (crowded elevators and large committees) however, liaising with many nationalities was an interesting, educational and invaluable experience. A highlight of this conference was being in the United Nations building for the last day's sessions and closing ceremonies. Thank you girls for all of your expertise and preparation. LFA did well.

I look forward to leading the Model UN Club next year - LFA students are certainly full of potential and talent. There is a large excited group of Grade 9's who are interested for next year - we have already had our first meeting. Thank you to Mr. Coady for being a fantastic teacher chaperone- he too looks forward to next year's conferences.
