After six years of waiting, Little Flower Academy finally achieved the pinnacle of success in Senior “A” Girls’ Basketball - winning the gold medal at the Provincial Championships in 1980.
Little Flower swept through the provincial tournament undefeated to win the gold after finishing second the previous two years. Editor’s Note: LFA also finished second under Dan in 1973- 74 and ‘74-75.
The championship game was a classic draw with two fine outside shooting teams matching excellent defence and a great desire to win. K.L.O. (Kelowna) was fresh from a very impressive win against regional rival, Revelstoke, and showed great poise and a winning attitude. Little Flower did not fall behind in this game and came out storming from the opening whistle. Despite excellent shooting by K.L.O.’s Alice Clarke and Wanda Richardson, the hour belonged to LFA. Corinne Zajac ‘80’s ball handling, floor leadership and clutch shooting were too much for K.L.O., which combined with Joyce Adam ‘81’s phenomenal 21 rebounds and Ann Nixon ‘80’s scoring gave Little Flower the Championship 53 to 44.
There is never enough said about the hard work and dedication needed to gain the satisfaction of winning. More applause should be given to all the teams and coaches that participated in this exciting tournament. The tournament was first class and is another of the great strides forward that Senior “A” Girls’ Basketball is making in BC. We, as 1980 Champions, are proud to be a part of it, as I’m sure are all the coaches and players in this great game.
