Model UN Club: Fall News

   The Model UN Club has another very exciting year ahead with an outstanding group of students who are showing great ability, commitment and promise. One of the factors leading to many successes at conferences is the significant contribution of the Model UN Leaders. The following 20 girls will be the 2014-5 Model UN Club leaders:



Grade 12 -Amanda Chiong, Eve Grebert, Claire Hii, Kayla Little, Alexa Nemeth, Kar Hing Ng, Ciara O' Leary and Jordan Shaw

Grade 11- Teresa Chen, Vanessa Cheng, Chesza de Los Santos, Hannah Goodridge, Jessica Fernandez, Paige Furlan, Abby Morrison, Sandy Pang, Noa Wang, Kristina Wong, Vanessa Shaio and Joyce Yam

    These leaders have already trained the present Grade 10 students for their first upcoming conference. The leaders conducted learning sessions each week after Spring Break last year when the new students were in Grade 9. This culminated in a three hour simulation after school when students were assigned countries and roles on the World Health Organization. Model UN leaders were chairs, assistant chairs, directors, pages and general encouragers and faciliators who gave awards to 8 students at the end of the simulation. They were certainly knowledgeable but the biggest surprise came when the present grade 10`s flawed leaders with their insights, logic and confidence. This group of approximately 50 new grade 10`s revealed themselves as the group that has shown the most promise in the club`s history!! It will be wondferful to see them bring their skills to their first conference in October. The Model UN leaders will continue to mentor the young students helping them with their position papers and leading another practice simulation in September. Thank you to all student leaders this year - you are an invaluable and vital part of the Model UN Club. I couldn`t run the Club without you!

  LFA will attend five Model UN conferences during this academic year and they are as follows:

1. VYMUN (WPGA Model UN conference) for grade 10 students only. This will be held at the Westin Hotel in Whistler from 24- 26th October, 2014.
2. CONNECT MUN for any student. This will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver from 21st- 23rd November, 2014.
3. BOSMUN (Boston University Model UN Conference) held at the Marriott Hotel Copley Place in Boston and the UN tour and talk in New York from January 30th -8th February, 2015.
4. CAHSMUN for any student. This will be held at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver from 6-8th March, 2015.
5. HMUNCHINA (Harvard`s Model UN in Beijing, China). This tour and conference is from March 12th- 23rd, 2015 and students will visit Shanghai and Zian as well as Beijing.

   I am very excited to have such a wonderful group of students in the Club this year and Mr. Coady and I continued to be awed by the heights to which LFA students aspire and climb and yes, this year we have the Great Wall for some of these achievers!
