Angels Qualify for Provincials

Parent contributor
Despite finishing sixth at the Lower Mainland Championships tournament, LFA played some of their best basketball of the season. Their games were so close, and, with five games in six days (including two elimination games), the undersized Angels side had to play with a short bench. They lost by just  5 and 3 points to the eventual third and fourth place teams. Finishing sixth, our Angels found themselves in a wild-card game against St. Michaels University School (SMUS) Jags, who were Victoria’s back-to-back city champions and ranked first in Island Provincial qualifying seeding.
From opening tip off the Angels carried the play but could not score. The game seemed to hesitate, locked at 2-2 for several minutes. Then, the Angels full court press started to impact the game, as SMUS made mistakes and turn-overs, as they tried to get out of their zone. In a matter of minutes, the game turned and the Angels were scoring in bunches, nearly entirely off of turn-overs. The Angels got contribution from all players, a total team effort on their way to an 84-67 win. With the win, they book their spot at this year's Provincial Championship. The Angels will have a chance to recover and get ready for next week’s Provincial tournament.

This year, just qualifying for the Provincial Championships out of such a strong zone is quite an accomplishment. The Lower Mainland dominates the Provincially ranked teams. LFA basketball is on a good run though. Persistent hard work and some good basketball has meant that most of our girls have qualified for the Provincial Championships (at different age groups) for four out of the last five years. Win or lose, playing at the highest level will be cherished, especially for those who will play their final high school games at the Provincials.
