Model UN Goes Virtual

Alison Chan '21
COVID-19 has posed a challenge for everyone, but this September, our MUN Angels are embracing the new normal by going online this fall!
As an alternative to physical committees, MUN students will be debating in online Model UN conferences via Zoom, where each committee will take place in a breakout room. Though this may seem quite different from traditional conferences, students will be able to experience the same connections and gain the same valuable skills as they do in physical committees. This fall, our Angels will be joining several online conferences. From October 16 to 17, 66 Angels (in grades 11 and 12) will be participating in SWCHSMUN in Calgary, with a variety of exciting committees ranging from the Commission on the Status of Women to the unique Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix committee. From October 30 to November 1, 55 of our newest grade10 MUN members will be attending VYMUN, an excellent beginner conference to gain confidence and hone debate and diplomatic skills, with even a possible online social. From November 20-22, Angels are looking forward to Horizons MUN, another exciting online conference of many opportunities for skill development with registration yet to come. During these difficult times, we could not have run the MUN Club without the contribution of our Secretariat members and Leaders. Thank you to Kimberly Kavlekar '21, our Secretary General; Stephanie Chau '21 and Ellie Hwang '21 for Training and Teaching; Natalie Zanatta '21 and Nicole Stein '21 for Delegate Affairs; Erin You '21 for Treasurer; and me, Alison Chan '21 for Public Relations. With COVID-19 affecting every nation, now is not a more appropriate time to focus on our interest in international relations and cooperation. As the current United Nations Secretary General states, “The world needs your energy, and I draw great hope from seeing your generation mobilize to address the challenges of our time and to build a healthier, more equitable and sustainable future for all.”
