LFA are UBC Field Hockey Tournament Champs

LFA played a tired but determined J.L. Crowe in the UBC Tournament championship game. Coming out and playing with poise and focus, the Angels deserved their win in the tournament final.
Through the tournament, J.L. Crowe and LFA emerged as the two strongest teams, so their meeting in the final was not surprising. Indeed, so close were they that it came down to goal difference to decide the pool standings once Crowe and LFA fought to a 3-3 draw on Friday night.

Better rested because of how the games fell, LFA had more jump from the first whistle. Developing the play wide and running hard down the flanks exposed the fatigue the opposition were enduring. Short corners came. An early corner resulted in a blistering hit from Alison Kuzyk '20 from the top of the D. The Crowe post-person ended up blocking the certain goal with her foot (by accident) and LFA was rightly awarded the penalty flick. Nicole Shi '18 calmly deposited it in the back of the net for the early lead. The Angels doubled their lead about 10 minutes later. After some fantastic build up down the left side, Gracie Korac '20 was able to get the ball long, which was fed back to Alison at the top of the D. She made several lovely moves to find space before slipping a lovely ball to Sophie Morrison '19, who touched it into the empty net.

Up 2-0, there was still some lovely hockey to be played. Again, taking the wide ball, Lorraine Fabre '18 drove the line, slipping the ball to Sophie, who in turn put a crisp pass across the face of goal to Alison who released a high one-time shot. Incredibly, the Crowe goalie made the save and then denied the rebound attempt. It was a world class save on some decisive hockey by our Angels. Amazingly, the Crowe goalie outdid herself in the second half. Alison took a hit from the top of the D, perfectly placed to Mira Teoli '18, who deflected the ball perfectly at the right corner of the net. Somehow the goalie made the save again. Two save you almost never see in high school hockey. In one game.

It should be noted that Crowe had their attack too. Athena Pucovski '19 pulled out an impressive series of saves of her own in the second half, including taking down a high shot that appeared labeled for the top corner. It was Athena's best game, as she was called into action several times and looked confident and aggresive throughout.

The tournament win will build confidence as we face a critical league game on Wednesday against York House. Go Angels!
