Angel at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Animation and Design

Vanessa Ng '18 has a love of art and design that led her to try out university art classes in the Savannah College of Art and Design's 'Rising Star' Program at their Hong Kong campus. Read about her experiences in the interview that follows.
What did you study?
Vanessa: In Summer 2017, I studied Design 100 and Animation 180, university-accredited courses, taught by SCAD professors (my animation professor has won awards for his original films), earning me university credits. These classes were 5 hours a day, for 5 weeks.

Why did you decide to apply for this program?
Vanessa: I was unsure whether or not a creative career would be the right path for me, and I wanted a better sense of what I wanted to pursue.

Where were the other participants from?
Vanessa: Participants were from around the world, such as Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Canada, the United States.

What did you enjoy most?
Vanessa: Working in the diverse environment, from learning different techniques to the creatively decorated space. Each room and hallway displayed a variety of artwork, which inspired me to create as well. I was exposed to a range of work, like fashion designing, interior designing, accessory designing, and photography, to name a few.

Can you tell us some of the things you learned?
Vanessa: One beneficial skill was how to use Adobe Photoshop more effectively. At the end of 5 weeks, I couldn’t believe how much more confidence I had in using the program.
The importance of not procrastinating was something else I learned. The courses were so tightly packed together, I found myself working tirelessly at night pulling together my projects for the next day. I had to keep my time management skills up to par so my assignments were in on time.
A surprising thing I learned is that it’s okay to be criticized by others. In fact, hearing and accepting others’ suggestions and constructive comments helped me grow as a better artist.
One of the best feelings out of the entire experience was the feeling of being understood and supported. I met talented artists and designers near to my age, and it was very inspiring to see each other's art processes from start to finish. Nearly everyone there aspired to be an artist, which we could all relate to.
Outside of the classroom, the university had guided activities and tours around Hong Kong. It was an exciting opportunity to taste local foods and visit tourist attractions while studying abroad. If anyone has the opportunity to attend something similar, I’d highly recommend it!

And lastly, why do you enjoy creating art?
Vanessa: I enjoy creating art because the possibilities are endless and I can share my ideas with others through a creative outlet. Art is a universal expression and can be interpreted in an infinite amount of ways. My passion for art pushes my limits to think creatively, outside of the box, and come up with unique ideas.
