Angels Finish Strong at Provincials

Our Senior Basketball Angels fought their way into the AA Provincial Basketball Championships, playing some inspired basketball down the stretch. Having to play two extra games during the lower mainland tournament to qualify as a wildcard in the provincial tournament, the Angels found themselves ranked 14th out of the 16 teams.
The first game they played was against #3-ranked GW Graham, the eventual finalists. It was a tale of two halves as the Angels played hard and had the lead at times in the first half. But in the second half, GW Graham’s star player showed why she’s a member of Canada’s national basketball program. She dominated the boards and sunk all her shots from everywhere on the court. The Angels eventually lost 82-42.

With the loss, the best LFA could do was a 9th place finish, if they could run the consolation tier. The first game was against #11-ranked, Westsyde Secondary. It was a high scoring game, with both teams not wanting to lose. The Angels prevailed 74-69 in overtime. The next game had our Angels against a familiar rival in #7-ranked, St. Thomas More Knights. The energetic Knights took a 10-0 lead early. Throughout the game, the shots would not fall for LFA. STM took this game 68-48. This left a final game against #9-ranked Whistler, which was a team that the Angels have lost to badly for the past two seasons.

The game was Raichel Feenan’s ’18 last high school game, so the rest of the team tried to give her the ball as much as possible in the paint. She had her most dominating performance of the season. The Angels went on to win 71-52 and finished 11th, three spots up from the initial 14th place ranking.

Every player got to play in the tournament and scored at least one basket. As a testament to the closeness of the players, Ceili McCabe ’19 gave her hard earned “Player of the Game” t-shirt to Raichel as a tournament memento. To coach Mackay, coach Van, coach Ramirez, and coach Feenan who only started working together this season, the team thanks you for your hard work and commitment. The coaching played a big role in getting our team to the provincials, which was a win in itself. Each player should be commended for stepping up their game. A big shout out to team manager Shelisse Durity-Wingson ’19 for filling water bottles and keeping the team loose on the bench, as well as all the parent drivers and our parent videographer, who got coaches the game film for review. This season was a nice surprise and real building block for next year, as the team will welcome back healthy and eager Kayla Canama ’19 and Alexis Fong ’19 to make another run at the provincials.
