Technovation: Going Far Beyond Expectations

Mr. Dan Chow
LFA's STEAM program presents to you the Technovation Team 2017-18! Technovation is a global competition that involves teams of female students creating a mobile device application, a business plan, video pitch and a live venture pitch. Our LFA team took a unique approach that reflects the ambitious nature of our girls and catupulted them into the regional Technovation compeition at SFU.
Out of the 14 teams that made it to the regional competition at SFU, we were the only team that used C# programming language, Unity 3D game engine and Xcode to produce a game for the iPhone platform. These are professional-grade development tools with a steep learning curve not intended for novices. But that didn't matter. Team LFA was absolutely determined to make it work and they did!

They learned how to use the accelerometer in their iPhone as an input to control the game object. They learned how to make the game object interact with other game objects. They learned how to make the main object bounce off the walls not to mention how to side-load an app from Unity 3D engine to an iPhone using Xcode. This is of course in addition to learning the Unity 3D engine interface, language syntax used by C# language and object oriented programming.

All of this is in addition to the creating the graphical assets for the game, a business plan, doing market research, making a pitch video and a live pitch presentation. Our students went so far beyond anyone’s expectations, I don’t think the judges knew what to expect. Quite simply, Unity 3D engine, C# language, Xcode are not tools that you see secondary students using.

A very special thanks goes out to Brigitta Angelica who created the graphic assets for the video game application. Also a special thanks goes out to Yiting Zhang who was our technology mentor and Julius Michael who was our business mentor.
