Provincial Bronze for Badminton

The team began the season with many exhibition games against Carver Christian, St.John’s and the annual Semiahmoo Totemhawk Tournament in preparation for the Zone Playoffs against Crofton/St. George's. Our LFA/VC team emerged victorious and secured a spot in the provincial championships.

After qualifying, LFA/VC faced Churchill, Steveston-London and Burnaby Mountain Secondary to determine seeding for provincials. After reassuring victories over Churchill and BMSS, the team took their first loss of the season to SLSS, in a nail-biting three-set deciding match.

After much training and many practices, the big day finally arrived. The team began the tournament with a power-pool play alongside Fraser Heights, Churchill and Douglas Park. After a long day of three consecutive matches against the schools, the team finished second in the pool, placing them at the top of the bottom draw.

The following day, they advanced to the quarterfinals where the team defeated Moscrop 7 to 4, which launched them into the semi-finals against Pinetree. Despite incredible efforts and tireless fights, the team fell just short of the win, with a 6-5 loss. Undeterred from this, however, LFA and VC picked themselves up and returned the following day to fight hard for the bronze medal. And it certainly paid off. Team captains Maddie Buss '18 and Rhonda Tam '18 won their two doubles matches with many thrilling rallies and Janelle Wong '19 brought home another win in her singles match. It came down to a gruelling mixed doubles game that would decide the third place team. Janelle Wong '19 and partner Wesley Huang viciously battled out three sets and emerged victorious, securing the medal for the team.

This season’s success was made possible with the help of many people who dedicated their time and effort to all the members. On behalf of the LFA/VC Badminton Team, we would like to extend a special thank you to Madame St. Arnaud for her incredible organization and continued encouragement, Haijun Liu and Ted Tam for their coaching and mentorship and Mr.Ballard for his support of the team. We would also like to thank senior Captains Maddie and Rhonda for their dedication to the team for the past 5 years.

We are proud of our achievements this season and look forward to what will come for the 2018-2019 team. Go Angels Go!
